CM Punk Leaving WWE: Power Ranking the 13 Wrestling Personalities He Hates Most
We are now just 10 days before seemingly the last that we will see of CM Punk in WWE. Outside of house shows, the last Raw will be next Monday, while his last match would believed to be at Money in the Bank.
Instead of focus being on what will happen in 10 days, the focus of most of the wrestling community is still around what happened 10 days ago, when CM Punk had a shoot promo that looked to have gone too far for WWE. Nobody was safe from Punk's verbal rant, which hit much of WWE's heavy hitters in the back, as well as some alumni of the promotion. Punk looked like he had more to say before his microphone got cut off, but the Straight Edge Superstar already had a list of people that he hates.
Here is a list ranking those around the wrestling world that CM Punk will not be sending Christmas cards to this year and, more importantly, likely will not be working with in the coming days.
13. Randy Orton
1 of 13These two put on a good WrestleMania match and have had a history in storyline. As far as real life goes, I'm sure that these two don't have much of a beef with one another. Punk, however, probably should have a little bit of a beef with Orton.
Orton can seemingly do no wrong in the eyes of WWE, while Punk is held under a microscope. Orton gets all of the opportunities that he wants, including being moved over to SmackDown specifically to have him dominate the brand. Meanwhile, Punk is lost in the shuffle on Raw, which seems to be the story of Punk's WWE career.
Orton recently got some heat from critics for comments about Divas Champion Kelly Kelly, among other Superstars. They seemed right on par, if not worse, compared to Punk's shoot promo. Orton likely will not face any punishment for it, while Punk's fate is all but sealed. If you couple that with all of the negative heat that Orton has drawn backstage to end Kofi Kingston's push or reportedly end Mr. Kennedy's WWE tenure, you can see why Orton deserves some hatred.
This all is not even coupled with the fact that Orton violated the Wellness Policy when it was put into place and was not suspended off of television because he was in the middle of a storyline with Hulk Hogan. CM Punk's straightedge gimmick is exactly his real way of life, so seeing someone get special treatment for using banned substances and getting slaps on the wrists over punishments is something that could make Punk's blood boil.
12. Keith Stone
2 of 13This is, of course, a joke slide. There may be an issue hidden in this innocent advertising opportunity, though. Keith Stone is the spokesman for Keystone Light, who seem to be a new major sponsor of WWE. With WWE's PG rating, the major sponsoring from a beer company seems to conflict with one another.
CM Punk can't talk about Vince McMahon being dead, but WWE can advertise watered-down beer to a large children audience? Something doesn't quite add up here.
11. CHIKARA Pro Wrestling
3 of 13I have been to CHIKARA shows and they are one of the most impressive independent promotions in the world right now. Some would consider CHIKARA to be a potential destination for Punk when he leaves WWE, except that he might hate CHIKARA more than WWE.
The promotion has never gotten along with CM Punk and have poked fun at him by having a gimmick of a wrestling chipmunk called CP Munk on their roster. The chipmunk has patches that resemble some of Punk's predominant tattoos. CHIKARA took exception to Punk "selling out" by going to WWE in the first place and, while Punk says he isn't always upset about the parody, he isn't exactly fond of CHIKARA as a company.
10. Hulk Hogan
4 of 13While Punk may admire the courage that Hogan had to stand up to Vince McMahon and do whatever he pleased, these two have not exchanged kind words in the past. Two years ago, when Hogan signed with TNA, Punk went on a radio show and, more or less, said that he hoped Hogan would do well to strengthen the business, but that he doesn't have faith that Hogan going to TNA is for anything but Hogan's own ego.
Let's not forget that Punk is a TNA alum and has friends that work in that promotion. Most importantly, Punk is not a selfish guy if it means that something better for the wrestling business as a whole comes of it. Punk is even a company guy in his comments on the radio show, plugging an upcoming Tribute to the Troops show.
In those two years, we have seen exactly what Hogan wished to do with TNA and Punk cannot be very pleased with the lack of progress. Hogan has, indeed, made TNA about himself. For those TNA fans that think the company will woo Punk back to TNA after his WWE days are over, you are incredibly mistaken.
9. Jeff Hardy
5 of 13CM Punk cannot help but look at someone like Jeff Hardy and not be happy to share a spotlight with him, let alone have to get him over as a world champion contender. CM Punk himself has only won a world championship in two ways in his career: cashing in a Money in the Bank briefcase or humiliating Jeff Hardy. Meanwhile, Hardy not only earned his title shots, but got booked very strong from the get-go.
Hardy's lifestyle had to mess with Punk slightly, even if he is a professional. Hardy has been fighting demons for a few years now and is rewarded with more high-profile matches, while Punk is a near model employee and doesn't get the same respect? Even if the hatred was within the story, I wouldn't blame CM Punk for feeling a little revenge granted when Hardy was arrested just days after leaving WWE.
8. Shawn Michaels
6 of 13For the last few years, as Shawn Michaels became less about being a main-event player, The Heartbreak Kid had some pull in the backstage. He was close with Triple H, he knew The McMahon Family well and anyone who can pull off a screwjob has to be in good with the bosses.
When Michaels finally left, he had the ability to take his knowledge and put his mark on a Superstar. It would have been the equivalent of being a made man in the mafia. A sign of approval from Shawn Michaels itself couldn't possibly go wasted. The passing of the torch went to Drew McIntyre and it did go wasted.
Michaels also had some demons in his life, but has turned his life around with religion. Punk has never put pressure for his straightedge lifestyle onto other people but, even if it was only said on the storyline, Punk has to wonder why him staying straightedge and Michaels righting the ship are held on the same type of level.
7. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin
7 of 13Punk and his Twitter rival may or may not be cool with one another behind the scenes. Considering that their gimmicks clash with one another and that they are two people that are closest to their actual gimmicks, there may be some animosity built up.
Punk can show up to a live episode of Raw wearing attire to show tribute to "Macho Man" Randy Savage, which was the largest and just one of the very few tributes from individual Superstars. Meanwhile, Austin can catch some beers and piss off the sensors while getting more of a reaction from the crowd than anyone.
CM Punk is still active and is in fantastic shape at this time. Punk turns 33 this year and is in the middle of his prime, yet he gets his television time and endorsements taken up by a guy with bad knees that hasn't had a real match in seven years.
6. John Laurinitus
8 of 13Now, it is time to get to the meat and potatoes of this list. It all begins with this man, John Laurinitus, Over the last several years, Laurinitus has built himself up through the ranks in talent relations with WWE. Better known as Johnny Ace in his wrestling days, Laurinitus is the younger brother of Road Warrior Animal and the uncle of James Laurinitus, who is now a linebacker for the St. Louis Rams.
Since 2009, Laurinitus has been the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations, replacing Jim Ross in that role. Laurinitus has come under fire on a few occasions since his promotion. Laurinitus is blamed for not re-signing Chris Jericho when his contract ran out last year and is getting a lot of heat backstage for CM Punk's upcoming departure.
CM Punk's shoot promo may have been a work, but there was certainly some truth in his scathing words to Laurinitus, who seemed to have gotten the worst out of it.
Reports are surfacing that Laurinitus is trying very hard to re-sign Rey Mysterio when his contract runs out next year. If not, it may cost Laurinitus his job.
5. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
9 of 13The top "ass-kisser," according to CM Punk's worked shoot, is The Rock. Not only does The Rock come and go as he pleases, as well as getting more marketability despite not being a full-time Superstar, I'm sure that it really does bother CM Punk, among other Superstars in the back, that The Rock is headlining this upcoming WrestleMania.
Punk has even said things on WWE's tour of Australia in regards to The Rock and actual praise for John Cena. Like he said during his shoot, he doesn't hate John Cena.
4. Wrestling Fans
10 of 13If you look like these two clowns when you go to wrestling shows, CM Punk hates you. In fact, CM Punk probably hates people like me and you as well. When CM Punk leaves WWE, will any of us leave with him? If the answer is no, then you can't truly say that you are a fan of CM Punk and like everything that he says.
For as loyal as you are to buy his shirts and cheer for him in his matches, you will each find someone new to cheer for when he leaves.
The business moves on with or without you, which CM Punk understands better than most people do. Unless CM Punk's departure is your official end of watching sports entertainment, there should be no sympathy for you wishing that Punk wouldn't leave. Let CM Punk do what he has to do and he may end up coming back after all.
By the way, if either one of these guys looks familiar to any of you, let them know that they are the exact kind of stereotype of wrestling fan that should probably be wiped out. They just look ridiculous.
3. Stephanie McMahon
11 of 13Stephanie McMahon is listed on the WWE Corporate website as the current Executive Vice President, Creative Development and Operations. Basically, Stephanie can control how you are being booked.
For those keeping score at home, this is the "idiotic daughter" that Punk referenced in his rant. I don't think much more needs to be said.
2. Triple H
12 of 13See the previous slide for Stephanie, as this is Stephanie's husband and the target on the "doofus son-in-law" remark.
1. Vince McMahon
13 of 13It all comes back to Vince. Everything negative that CM Punk has ever had to say about the WWE can be traced back to McMahon. Every missed opportunity, every bad booking and everything that has ever buried CM Punk and added to his frustrations all comes back to the boss.
If you want one singular person to blame for CM Punk getting so frustrated over the years and wanting to leave, it is Vince McMahon. From destroying Paul Heyman's reputation to a lack of opportunities for success, Punk has a lot to be upset about.
Also keep in mind that for all that Punk has done, there hasn't been one clean road to a world title for CM Punk, meaning that the company never had much faith in Punk earning a world championship on his own merit, even if he was given title shots on his own merit.
What would piss me off the most if I was CM Punk is that I was never given the WWE Championship. The World Heavyweight Championship looks nice and all, but the name and prestige of the WWE Championship is the title that really is more coveted than the rest.
If you couple it with the fact that CM Punk will have his last match with the company against the face of the company, in his hometown, at a pay-per-view inspired for the match concept where he made his mark and going after the title that has eluded him, there will be a lot of emotions for CM Punk in just 10 days at Money in the Bank.
