Manchester City Transfer News: Will Gael Clichy Succeed at City?

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

Manchester City has completed yet another raid on London and this time come away with Arsenal defender Gael Clichy.

According to a breaking report at Mirror Football:

"

Gael Clichy has completed his move to Manchester City. Clichy completed his medical earlier today and spent this afternoon meeting with club officials to seal his move north from Arsenal.

Clichy has signed a four-year contract and becomes the latest in a succession of former Arsenal players to join the City revolution.

But former big-name Arsenal players like Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor highlight that list and their ventures to City have not gone exactly as planned in recent seasons.

Toure was stripped of his captain's armband to start the season, remained a starter, but was eventually suspended for failing a drug test. His future still remains uncertain as serves a six-month suspension that started in March.

As for Adebayor, he was loaned out to Real Madrid in the second half of this season and the Togolese star has stated that he will wait until the very last minute of the transfer window in an effort to force a full-time move to the Bernabeu.

So with this in mind, as City continues to try and find ways to overtake their Manchester rivals at Old Trafford, will Gael Clichy make a difference or will he go the way of his for Gunners?

The 25-year-old Frenchman had a number of suitors this summer and was a consistent starter at the Emirates during his time there, but also battled injury and did show a decline in play.

City will make it a point to put Clichy in position to succeed, but they also have a number of other highly paid stars that boss Roberto Mancini has no plans with.

And there is also the potential move for Clichy's now former teammate, Samir Nasri, as he tries to force himself away the Emirates as well.

These things around Clichy will not make or break his time with City, that will be up to him, and at 25 years old he still has a number of good years ahead of him and a possible World Cup appearance if he can hold it together until 2014.

Toure was a bit older than Clichy when he was brought over to City, but Adebayor was approximately the same age. It didn't take long—both were signed in 2009—for things come apart for both of them so it will be important to see how Clichy handles playing with a new club for the first time since 2003.

It is a solid starting move for Mancini, especially as he tries to pave the way for Nasri, but there is no guaranteed success rate between these two teams' transfer history.

As for Arsenal, this looks to be the beginning of a mass exodus that could ultimately cost Wenger four or five star players (if they really all leave) and definitely his job.

Clichy got what he wanted and now it is up to him to make it count.
