WWE: Could Zack Ryder's Internet Championship Belt Help Get Him Over on TV?
At a recent WWE live event in Australia, Zack Ryder came out with the title belt he debuted on his internet show Z! True Long Island Story.
At the event, he was actually billed as the WWE Internet Champion, and he went on to defend the belt in a match against Primo, which Ryder won. Here is what Ryder had to say on his Twitter account following the win.
"History was made tonight in Melbourne, Australia...I defended the Internet Championship for the very first time...and I won! WWWYKI"
The belt is basically an Intercontinental replica belt with logos over the side plates for YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and his own Z logo.
This is another move by the young superstar that has helped get himself over without any help from WWE management. His Internet show has made him one of the new Internet darlings of the IWC.
If this gimmick were to be brought to television, I could see it being a successful way of getting Ryder over with the rest of the crowd. This could be similar to Ted Dibiase's Million Dollar Championship or Taz's FTW Title from ECW.
These titles were never sanctioned but got their holders over with the crowd.
The concept of an Internet title is actually kind of interesting. It would almost be a modern day TV Championship. If WWE ever decides to actually get behind Zack Ryder, then I think this gimmick is a good way to set him a part from the pack.
Why the people over at WWE.com have not grabbed Ryder's talents for one of their own Internet segments is beyond my comprehension.
Miz and Morrison got over huge because of their hilarious show, why couldn't they try the same thing with Ryder, someone who has been with WWE for a few years now.
Even Scotty Goldman (Colt Cabana) had his own show called What's Crackin' with Scotty Goldman.
I am not one of those people who thinks Ryder is the next big thing in wrestling, but I applaud him for taking the initiative to do what he needed to do in order to get over with his fans.
Will he ever be a World Champion? I don't know. But I do know that if WWE loses Ryder then someone else will grab him and use his comedy chops to help their company.
I guess I have to end this with a Woo Woo Woo You Know It
