Wladimir Klitschko, David Haye and the 5 Most Questioned Chins in Boxing
Heavyweight champions Wladimir Klitschko and David Haye step into the ring on July 2 with the fact that all of their losses have come by knockout.
Haye has been knocked out once while Klitschko has been finished three times in his career, making the likely occurrence of a stoppage a good bet in this upcoming grudge match at the Imtech Arena in Hamburg, Germany.
Having a questioned chin can make the fight more exciting for fans to watch, but it is also a dangerous position that each fighter must deal with every time they enter the ring.
These are the five most questioned chins in boxing.
No. 5: Jason Litzau
1 of 5"The American Boy" Jason Litzau has been knocked out three times, and they have all been dramatic knockout losses.
Litzau was knocked out for the first time when he put his undefeated record on the line against Jose Hernandez in 2006. He was knocked down in the first round but survived to make it to Round 8 while leading on all three scorecards by four points. He was knocked out with one punch.
After coming off of his major upset over Celestine Caballero in 2010, he decided to take on the undefeated up-and-comer Adrien Broner.
He was knocked out in the first round of that fight. It was a surprising one considering he had just been coming off the best win of his career, but it's a perfect example of how a questionable chin can hold a fighter back from capitalizing on their greatest achievements.
No. 4: David Haye
2 of 5Current WBA Heavyweight Champion David Haye hasn't lost since 2004 when he was stopped in Round 5 by a cruiserweight named Carl Thompson. After being knocked down by a right hand, Haye got up but continued to fight on wobbly legs before his corner threw in the towel.
As he prepares for his showdown with Wladimir Klitschko, many boxing fans are questioning just how well he will handle a punch from a true heavyweight puncher like "Dr. Steelhammer."
Haye has had heavyweight bouts versus Monte Barrett, Nikolai Valuev and John Ruiz, but they don't hold the type of power that Klitschko possesses. Fans will find out quick just how well his chin holds up when he fights Klitschko, who has 49 knockouts in 55 wins.
Haye was also knocked down by Jean Marc Mormeck in their bout that he later won by TKO.
No. 3: Wladimir Klitschko
3 of 5Wladimr Klitschko appeared to be the next big thing before he lost his WBO heavyweight title in 2003 to hard-punching South African Corrie Sanders.
He didn't appear as much hurt as he did lost, making his chin one of the most questioned in the sport. In his lone loss before his fight to Sanders, he had been stopped by Ross Puritty in a fight he was winning
Klitschko was also defeated by Lamon Brewster a year after his loss to Sanders in a fight he was easily winning through four rounds. He was outlanding Brewster 3-to-1 going into Round 5 but was given a standing eight count after being rocked with a minute left in the round. Fatigued and hurt, Klitschko didn't make it to the end of the round, losing for the third time by TKO.
In his first bout with Samuel Peter, he was dropped three times before winning the fight by unanimous decision.
No. 2: Amir Khan
4 of 5WBA World Light Welterweight Champion Amir Khan will always have to deal with the questions that come from his first defeat as a professional to Breidis Prescott. The 2005 bout featured the 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist getting knocked out in the very first minute of the first round.
In his most recent bout versus Marcos Maidana, he showcased a very good chin but was still rocked late in a fight that he was clearly winning up to that point. All it takes is one shot when a boxer has a questionable chin, and Khan had the durability to make it through the bout without being dropped or stopped.
No. 1: Roy Jones Jr.
5 of 5It's tough to admit that the legendary Roy Jones Jr. has the most questioned chin in boxing but he does. In two of his last three bouts, he lost by knockout, including his most recent bout against Denis Lebedev in Russia.
Jones made it to the final round but was knocked out with just two seconds left in the bout.
For a boxer that relied on strict defense and counter-punching throughout the prime of his career, Jones is sure taking a fair deal of punishment that has been adding up over the past couple years. He has now been knocked out in four of his eight career losses.
