Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Maweather: The Only Fight That Matters to Boxing Fans
Major boxing matches have been lined up for the rest of the year by top boxing promoters who manage and promote the career of today's most popular boxers.
Some of the major fights include among others, the Klitschko-Haye fight scheduled for July 2, Zab Judah vs. Amir Khan on July 23, Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz on September 17, Sergio Martinez vs. Darren Barker on October 1 and Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12.
These fights will most likely make hundreds of thousands in pay-per-view (PPV) buys, perhaps millions in the case of Pacquiao vs. Marquez and Mayweather vs. Ortiz.
Still, many boxing fans are not as enthusiastic or even excited to watch these fights even with Pacquiao and Mayweather already in this year's line up and facing separate opponents.
Internet opinion survey statistics seems to show more fans will buy PPV tickets or subscriptions for a Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight than any other fights even if they feature Pacquiao and Mayweather taking on separate opponents.
The clamor for a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight has risen significantly in recent days after Mayweather and Ortiz held a joint press and promotional tour where the unbeaten boxer responded to a question from the press about his readiness to face Pacquiao soon.
"Do I want to fight Pacquiao? Absolutely," Mayweather said.
Boxing fans took Mayweather's statement as a sign he is indeed preparing for a clash with the fighting congressman from the Philippines.
But there has always been a precondition to Mayweather's statements about his a possible fight with Pacquiao, who accused Mayweather of defamation for his seemingly reckless statement alleging that Pacquiao is a drug cheat.
The clincher to the fight is Pacquiao's consent to submit himself to Olympic-style random drug test. To make his message loud and clear, Mayweather has come up with ad visuals with his now-famous "Take the Test" message which is most likely directed at Pacquiao.
“After this fight, if I’m able to negotiate a Pacquiao fight, it could happen,” Mayweather said. “(Ortiz) is a southpaw. That could lead to the Pacquiao fight. If it does or it doesn’t, I’m not going to stop fighting.”
Boxing promoters should be credited for coming up with potential blockbusters this year which already include fights that features Pacquiao and Mayweather taking on separate opponents.
But to avid boxing fans, there is no other fight that they would surely watch—the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather fight.
And for Mayweather, there is only one roadblock to the world's most desired fight and that is for Pacquiao to "take the test."
