UFC 131 Results: Live Play-by-Play, Recap and Analysis for the Entire Fight Card

In one of the biggest heavyweight fights in recent memory, Junior dos Santos will meet Shane Carwin at UFC 131 to determine the division's top contender, who will have the chance to fight UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez in their next fight.

Another top contender could be determined at UFC 131 in a featherweight bout between Kenny Florian and Diego Nunes. The fight will be Florian's first at featherweight after he began his UFC career at middleweight on Season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Bleacher Report will bring you live results and analysis from the event, which will take place at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Coverage will begin at approximately 6 pm ET/ 3 pm PT.

Michihiro Omigawa vs. Darren Elkins

As we get set for the Facebook and YouTube streams to start, Omigawa and Elkins are getting set to enter the Octagon. 

This will be Omigawa's fourth fight in the UFC, but he has yet to earn a victory. THis could be his last chance to make an impression on the UFC brass.

Elkins is 1-1 in the UFC after losing to rising star Charles Oliveira in his last fight. Elkins also may be fighting for his job at UFC 131.

Round 1

Omigawa is light on his feet and switch lead legs. Elkins is using his reach to his advantage early, though, and landing with frequency.

Elkins ducks a left hook and takes Omigawa down briefly. Omigawa attempts a leg lock, but Elkins slips out of it and stands.

Elkins is scoring with his jab-right hook combination and lands a hard left hook to end the round.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Elkins.

Round 2

Omigawa is coming forward and committing to his punches much more to start the second round. Elkins ' face is bloodied now.

Omigawa attempts to clinch and trip Elkins, but Elkins keep his balance. Omigawa is landing at a much higher percentage in this round, though.

Elkins is putting his combinations together in the last minute of the round, though, and lands a hard uppercut. It's probably too little too late as far as winning the round goes, though.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Omigawa.

Round 3

Both fighters are swinging hard to start the round. Omigawa ducks a hook and scores a big takedown.

After taking a few shots on the ground, Elkins uses a whizzer to escape as Omigawa tries to take his back.

Elkins tags Omigawa with a combination, but he needs to pick up the pace if he wants to win this fight.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Omigawa (29-28 Omigawa).

Elkins defeats Omigawa by decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27).

Not so sure about that one...

Hopefully, the UFC will give Omigawa another shot because he deserves it with that performance.

Joey Beltran vs. Aaron Rosa

After losing two fights in a row, Beltran likely needs a win in this fight to remain in the UFC. It won't come easily against Rosa, though.

Rosa is on a four fight winning streak and will make his UFC debut.

Round 1

Beltran controls the center of the Octagon and uses a clinch to press Rosa's back to the cage. The fighters separate and Beltran lands a straight left that hurts Rosa.

Both fighters swing wildly and hit each other with big shots, but both man remain standing.

Beltran tags Rosa with a right hand and is now mixing up his combinations with leg kicks to Rosa's left leg. Beltran takes the fight to the fence again and lands some hard elbows.

The fighters separate and swing wildly again. Beltran gets the best of the crazy exchange.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Beltran.

Round 2

Beltran lands some more leg kicks and then blasts Rosa with some huge shots, but Rosa is still standing. Rock chins on both of these guys.

Rosa is having much more success in the exchanges this round, but he takes a knee to the groin that causes a break in the action.

Rosa hurts Beltran with a combination and starts unleashing, but he hits Beltran with a knee to the groin and Beltran gets a chance to recover.

Both fighters tee off again and Beltran presses Rosa to the cage. Beltran hits Rosa with a punch after the bell.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Beltran.

Round 3

Rosa finally attempts to take the fight to the ground, but Beltran defends easily.

Beltran attempts a guillotine and lands a big knee. Beltran drags Rosa to the ground, lands a knee to the body and starts teeing off as Rosa tries to stand.

Rosa stands, but gets dragged right back down. Beltran drops a number of unanswered hammerfists and the fight is stopped.

Beltran defeats Rosa by technical knockout (hammerfists) at 1:26 of the third round.

A much-needed win for Beltran, but Rosa showed a ton of heart to last as long as he did. Expect to see Rosa get another shot in the UFC after putting on a great performance in defeat.

Dustin Poirier vs. Jason Young

Young makes his UFC debut on short notice against a serious contender in the featherweight division. Poirier is coming off of an upset win over Josh Grispi and was expected to fight Rani Yahya at UFC 131 before an injury forced Yahya out of the fight.

Round 1

Poirier presses the action with a combination and takes Young down with a double leg. Young uses a kimura attempt to stand.

Poirier blasts Young with another combination. Young is holding his own with some flashy striking and is showing a solid chin.

Poirier is scoring with leg kicks, but Young is keeping the round close with some technical strikes.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Poirier.

Round 2

Young is chopping at Poirier's lead leg. Poirier catches Young with a kick to the groin and there is a stop in the action.

Poirier seems to be light on his lead leg now after taking several inside leg kicks. Young is now taking control of the exchanges as Poiriers pace has slowed.

Both fighters swing for the fences and Poirier scores an important takedown at the end of the round. It shouldn't be enough to steal the round, but you never know after hearing the scores from the Omigawa-Elkins fights earlier.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Young.

Round 3

Poirier shoots in for a double leg, but Young is using the fence to defend. Poirier finally secures the takedown with a trip. Young escapes quickly, though.

Poirier takes the fight to the ground again, but Young is landing some hard elbows to the body. Young lands some hammerfists off of his back as the fight comes to an end.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Poirier (29-28 Poirier).

Poirier defeats Young by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).

Not so sure about the 30-27 scores from two judges, but Poirier deserved the win in a close fight. Both fighters are exciting prospects in the featherweight division.

Nick Ring vs. James Head

Head is making his UFC debut after earning a big win over former UFC fighter Gerald Harris. Head will meet the undefeated Ring, who is coming off of a controversial decision win over Riki Fukuda.

Round 1

Ring is working the clinch with knees and is scoring with leg kicks from distance. Ring secures a takedown with a nice single leg and moves directly into side control.

Head is able to escape and rocks Ring with a big shot. Ring stands and Head looks to press the action, but is stopped by a front kick from Ring.

Head blasts Ring with another right hand, but Ring scores another takedown with about 30 seconds remaining.

B/R scores the round 10-10.

Round 2

Ring takes Head down and defends a guillotine by jumping into side control. Ring is looking for a mounted triangle, but gives up on it.

Ring lands some hammerfists and elbows from full guard. Ring looks for a rear-naked choke, but Head shakes Ring off of his back. Ring is able to end up right back in side control, though.

Ring gains a mounted crucifix as the round comes to an end.

B/R scores the round 10-8 Ring.

Round 3

Ring secures another takedown within the first minute of the round. Ring is landing some hard elbows from half guard now.

Ring takes side control and is busting Head's face up. An exhausted Head gives up his back and is forced to tap due to a rear-naked choke.

Ring defeats Head by submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:33 of the third round.

Ring moves his record to 2-0 in an impressive performance. Ring has some impressive top control that could make him a threat in the middleweight division in the future.

Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Mike Massenzio

Soszynski will look for his second straight victory against Massenzio, who accepted this fight on less than one week notice. It will be interesting to see what kind of shape Massenzio will be in for this fight.

Round 1

Massenzio takes Soszynski down, but Soszynski escapes quickly. Massenzio looks for another takedown, but Soszynski defends. Massenzio secures another takedown, but he unable to keep the larger Soszynski down.

Soszynski stuffs a takedown and blasts Massenzio with a right uppercut. Massenzio eats a leg kick, but earns another takedown with less than two minutes remaining in the round.

Soszynski escapes quickly again and lands a combination near the end of the round.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Soszynski.

Round 2

Massenzio is looking for another takedown, but Soszynski defends rather easily. Soszynski is looking for a guillotine now.

Massenzio is desperate to take the fight to the ground, but isn't having much luck this round. Soszynski lands a nice combination and defends yet another takedown at the end of the round.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Soszynski.

Round 3

Soszynski sprawls on a takedown attempts and moves into side control. Soszynski lands some big elbows and knees to the body of Massenzio.

Soszynksi looks for a bulldog choke, but Massenzio slips out of it and stands with one minute remaining.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Soszynski (30-27 Soszynski).

Soszynski defeats Massenzio (30-27, 30-27, 30-26).

With two straight wins, Soszynski will now look for a step up in competition. Not a great performance from Massenzio, but he'll probably get another UFC fight after taking the fight on short notice at a heavier weight class.

Jesse Bongfeldt vs. Chris Weidman

A rising prospect, Weidman is undefeated in his career and earned a big win over Alessio Sakara in his UFC debut. Meanwhile, Bongfeldt fought to a draw in his UFC debut and last fight against Rafael Natal.

Round 1

Bongfeldt lands a big kick, but allows Weidman to clinch. Weidman uses a hip toss and winds up in side control.

Weidman looks for a kimura, but loses control of Bongfeldt's body. Bongfeldt escapes and shoots in for a double leg, but he is forced to tape with seconds remaining as Weidman locks up a guillotine.

Weidman defeats Bongfeldt by submission (guillotine) at 4:54 of the first round.

Weidman is going to be a tough test for anyone on the ground. If he can improve his stand-up, he has contender-level potential.

Sam Stout vs. Yves Edwards

UFC veterans Sam Stout and Yves Edwards will be looking to get a step up in competition, as both fighters are coming off of wins in their last fights in the UFC.

Round 1

Stout is scoring with leg kicks early. Edwards attempts a head kick and drops down for a single leg. Edwards gets the fight to the ground and Stout uses the butterfly guard.

Stout is able to stand without taking much damage. Edwards looks for a head kick, but he slips and Stout blocks it.

Stout goes to the body then knocks Edwards unconscious with a brutal left hook.

Stout defeats Edwards by knockout (punch) at 3:52 of the first round.

Stout ate a punch in the middle of his combination, but it didn't seem to effect him at all. Edwards was out before hit he the ground. One of the best knockouts of the year.

Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha

Rocha will make his debut against Cerrone, who is looking to make his mark as a lightweight contender in the UFC. Cerrone has won three straight fights since losing to Ben Henderson in the WEC.

Round 1

The second strike of the fight is an inside leg kick that catches Rocha in the groin. After a brief break, Cerrone goes right back to attacking the legs of Rocha.

Rocha scores a takedown, but Cerrone is active off of his back and escapes. Cerrone continues chopping at the lead leg of Rocha.

Cerrone catches a kick to the body and kicks Rocha's other leg out from under him.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Cerrone.

Round 2

Cerrone starts the round continuing to throw leg kicks. Rocha takes Cerrone down for a split second, but Cerrone quickly escapes.

Rocha can barely move on his lead leg after taking all these leg kicks. Rocha's takedowns are slow and telegraphed now.

Rocha tries to bait Cerrone into his guard, but Cerrone wags his finger at Rocha.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Cerrone.

Round 3

Cerrone catches another leg and kicks Rocha's leg out from under him. Cerrone chops at Rocha's leg and forces him to switch lead legs.

Rocha just has nothing left. Cerrone finally puts together a combination to the head and drops Rocha at the end of the fight.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Cerrone (30-27 Cerrone).

Cerrone defeats Rocha by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26).

It'll be interesting to see if Cerrone can become a contender in the UFC after losing to Henderson twice while in the WEC.

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman

The UFC will add some much-needed heavyweight talent with this fight. Einemo will return to competition for the first time in years, but he is not to be underestimated against Herman.

Round 1

Einemo attempts to take Herman down and pays the price by taking a kick. Einemo presses Herman to the fence.

Herman clinches and lands a hard knee. Einemo answers with a right hand.

Herman is landing kicks to the legs, but Einemo catches one and takes Herman down. Einemo moves immediately into side control. Herman uses the fence to escape, though.

Einemo picks up his striking at the end of the round and attempts a trip takedown, but Herman avoids it with a whizzer.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Einemo.

Round 2

Einemo lands a big right hand that backs Einemo up. Einemo is having a lot of success with that straight right hand.

Einemo lands a knee to the body. Herman lands a kick that sweeps Einemo's legs out from under him.

Herman is hurt with a knee, but drops Einemo with a left hook and is looking for the finish. Herman allows Einemo to stand.

Herman lands a series of knees and Einemo is wobbled. Einemo looks to pull guard, but it turns out to work against him as Herman finishes the fight with ground and pound.


Herman defeats Einemo by technical knockout (punches) at 3:19 of the second round.

Great fight. The UFC adds some depth to the heavyweight division with both of these fighters.

Demian Maia vs. Mark Munoz

Two middleweight contenders will go toe to toe in this fight. Maia and Munoz are both skilled on the ground and improving their striking.

Round 1

Maia lands a big right hand and clinches against the fence. The referee breaks the fighters up after a lack of action.

Maia's striking looks much improved early on this fight. He ducks a kick and lands another beautiful right hook.

Munoz looks for a takedown at the end of the round, but the buzzer sounds.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Maia.

Round 2

Munoz tags Maia, which forces a takedown attempt. Munoz is defending and landing huge shots to the body and thigh of Maia.

Munoz attempts a D'Arce choke, but Maia slides out of it and winds up on top. Munoz escapes and lands another big shot.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Munoz.

Round 3

Munoz looks to take the fight to the ground. Maia attempts to lock up a crucifix against the fence, but Munoz gets back to his feet.

Munoz gets a big takedown with about one minute remaining, but Maia stands quickly. Munoz has kept Maia's back against the fence for a large portion of the round, which may make the difference on the scorecards.

Maia looks to score a takedown at the end of the fight, but Munoz defends.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Munoz (29-28 Munoz).

Munoz defeats Maia by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).


Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes

Florian looks to make his statement for a shot at the featherweight title against Diego Nunes, who is coming off a huge upset win over former WEC Featherweight Champion Mike Brown.

Round 1

Nunes works hard for a double leg takedown and gets it, but Florian stands and separates.

Nunes connects with a spinning backfist and wobbles Florian with a right head kick. Florian gets a big takedown with one minute remaining in the round, though.

Nunes drops Florian with a left hook as the round comes to an end.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Nunes.

Round 2

Florian lifts a single leg, but Nunes defends the takedown. Nunes body locks and takes Florian down with a trip.

Florian throws some elbows off of his back and Nunes is cut. Florian attempts a triangle armbar, but Nunes defends.

Nunes backs out of Florians guard and lets him stand. Florian scores a big takedown with less than two minutes remaining. Florian stacks Nunes and lands a few shots at the end of the round.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Florian.

Round 3

Florian looks to have more energy than Nunes to start the third round. He is seeing Nunes' kicks coming and lands a hard leg kick.

Florian lands a knee to the body and takes the fight to the ground with a double leg.Florian moves to half guard with three minutes remaining.

Now in side control, Florian tries to pull Nunes away from the fence. Nunes stands, though, and cracks Florian with a left hand.

Florian is using his jab well now, reminiscent of his fight with Takanori Gomi. Nunes buckles Florian with a right hand at the buzzer, but Florian keeps his feet.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Florian (29-28 Florian).

Florian defeats Nunes by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28).

Big win for Florian in his featherweight debut. Time will tell if it will be enough to earn him a shot at UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo.

Junior Dos Santos vs. Shane Carwin

A shot at UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez is on the line in this fight between Dos Santos and Carwin. Carwin was originally expected to meet Einemo at UFC 131, but took the fight with Dos Santos when Brock Lesnar was forced to withdraw from the fight.

Round 1

Carwin looks for a single leg, but Dos Santos defends well. Carwin trips Dos Santos with a single leg, but he is unable to control the Brazilian.

Dos Santos is connecting with his jab frequently now. He hurts Carwin with a right hand and Carwin covers up on the ground. Dos Santos starts teeing off and looks to the referee for a stoppage.

He doesn't get one, but Carwin is bloodied and battered.

B/R scores the round 10-8 Dos Santos.

Round 2

Dos Santos has been able to keep distance and that is the difference maker right now. He continues to connect with his jab.

Dos Santos is going to the body now. Not much action two minutes into the round.

Carwin lands a big shot, but Dos Santos backpedals away from it. Carwin is landing leg kicks now and might be able to steal this round.

Dos Santos lands a solid head kick, but Carwin takes it and keeps on ticking. Dos Santos puts some combinations together at the end of the round.

B/R scores the round 10-10.

Round 3

Carwin drops for a single leg and takes Dos Santos down. Dos Santos stands quickly, though.

Dos Santos lands a jab and buckles Carwin with a left hook. Dos Santos is picking Carwin apart now, but referee Herb Dean asks the doctor to take a look at Carwin. He's alright and the fight continues with one minute remaining.

Dos Santos blows through Carwin with a double leg. Carwin escapes and there are 30 seconds remaining. Dos Santos lifts Carwin and finishes another double leg.

B/R scores the round 10-9 Dos Santos (30-27 Dos Santos).

Dos Santos defeats Carwin by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26).

According to Compustrike, Dos Santos outlanded Carwin 94 to 13 in total strikes landed. Dos Santos crushed Carwin in power strikes, outlanding him 76 to 8.
