UFC 132 Results: Ranking the Top 10 Lightweights in the UFC

Tim McTiernanJul 3, 2011

Last night was possibly the best PPV of the year so far.

Carlos Condit showed he belongs at the top of the division.

Tito Ortiz showed he's got a bit of gas left in the tank.

It was shown yet again that MMA judging needs improvement.

Chris Leben ended the career of a legend.

Dominick Cruz avenged his only career loss and put on a hell of a fight with Urjiah Faber in the process.

Aside from all that though, there were two major lightweight fights that took place, with Dennis Siver taking on Matt Wiman, and Melvin Guillard taking on Shane Roller.

Siver won a controversial decision, but Guillard left no doubt about his win, by leaving Roller unconscious on the mat.

Read on to see how this mixed up the lightweight ranks.

10. Sean Sherk

1 of 10

Sean Sherk (36-4-1) is the former UFC Lightweight Champion, and comes in as the No. 10 lightweight in the UFC right now.

Sherk's last fight took place at UFC 119 where he fought to a controversial split decision victory over up and coming prospect, Evan Dunham.

Sherk was hoping to make a return sometime this summer, but he does not yet have a fight scheduled, and doesn't look like he will anytime soon.

He may soon fall off this list entirely.

9. Ben Henderson

2 of 10

Ben Henderson (13-2) is the former WEC Lightweight Champion and the No. 9 lightweight in the UFC today.

Henderson's last fight took place at UFC 129, where he defeated Mark Bocek via unanimous decision.

Henderson's next fight is set to be against Jim Miller in August in what could likely be for the next shot at the UFC lightweight title.

At 27 years of age, expect Henderson to get a title shot at some point.

8. Anthony Pettis

3 of 10

Anthony Pettis (13-2) is the former and final WEC Lightweight Champion and No. 8 on the list.

In Pettis' last fight, he took on top contender, Clay Guida. He lost the fight via unanimous decision, as Guida used his wrestling to smother and control Pettis. Although Pettis was very active off his back, it wasn't enough to catch Guida in a submission.

Pettis lost his No. 1 contender status in that fight, and he is still very young, so he will look to build himself back up for another chance to fight for a title.

7. Matt Wiman

4 of 10

This may be the one and only time that somebody enters a top 10 list after losing the fight.

Matt Wiman (13-6) fought on Saturday night at UFC 132 where he took on Dennis Siver.

Many thought that Wiman had done enough to come away with the decision victory, but in the words of Dana White "never leave it in the hands of the judges".

Wiman got screwed out of the victory, and stormed out of the Octagon when it was announced that Siver was the winner.

You can expect that Dana White still gave him his win bonus; and will treat it as though he won the fight.

I may get some backlash for putting him here, but I stand by it.

6. Dennis Siver

5 of 10

And then there's Dennis Siver (19-7).

Siver was on the lucky end of a bad judging decision, in which all three judges scored the fight 29-28 in his favor.

Siver is now on a four fight win streak; and at the post fight press conference, there was a talk of a rematch between Siver and Guillard.

That would certainly be a good fight for the fans. They last fought three years ago, in a fight where Guillard TKO'd Siver in a little over thirty seconds.

I think it would be safe to say that the fight would be a bit longer this time.

5. Melvin Guillard

6 of 10

And now for the self proclaimed "dark horse" of the division, Melvin Guillard (29-8-2 [1 NC]).

Guillard looked very impressive last night, when he TKO'd Shane Roller at 2:12 into the first round. (On a side note, I predicted the fight down to the second).

Guillard is now on a five fight win streak, including three finishes, and one knockout of the night.

Guillard has really pulled it together since coming to Jackson's camp, and I think he has the tools to fight for the title someday soon.

As mentioned on the previous slide, I think a rematch with Siver would be a good fight.

4. Clay Guida

7 of 10

Clay Guida (29-11) is looking better than ever these days.

In Guida's last fight, he took on Anthony Pettis, and stripped him of his No. 1 contender status with a unanimous decision victory.

Guida is now on a four fight win streak, and as I said, he's looking better than ever.

Guida's next fight is yet to be announced, but he wants the upper level fighters, and he wants his shot at the title.

3. Jim Milller

8 of 10

The clear choice for No. 3 lightweight in the UFC is Jim Miller (20-2).

Jim Miller is on an absolute tear in the UFC, and is on a seven fight win streak. In fact, his last loss was to Gray Maynard. And his only loss before that was to Frankie Edgar.

Miller's last fight saw him TKO Kamal Shalorus in the third round at UFC 128.

His next fight is set to be against Ben Henderson, and should Miller win, he will be next in line for a title shot.

2. Gray Maynard

9 of 10

Gray Maynard (10-0-1 [1 NC]) is the current No. 1 contender to the lightweight title.

Maynard is currently the only person to hold a victory over the champ, but in their fight on New Years, they ended up fighting to a split draw.

They were going to have a rematch headline UFC 130, but both were forced to pull out with injuries.

There is no announced date for when the trilogy will be completed, but Dana White has said it will be ASAP.

Look for Maynard and Edgar to put on another epic fight whenever they do meet again.

1. Frankie Edgar

10 of 10

And of course, the champion sits at No. 1.

Frankie Edgar (13-1-1) is the current UFC Lightweight Champion.

Basically everything said on the previous slide applies to Edgar just the same.

These two are going to have a war when they meet for the belt again.
