Miguel Cotto vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Possible, Margarito Still Recovering
The likelihood of a highly anticipated rematch between WBA junior middleweight (154 lbs) champ Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO's) and Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO's) has fallen under question thanks to Margarito's eye injury.
Margarito's eye was injured by the heavy damage taken from pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO's) in their fight last November at the Cowboys Stadium.
Margarito has been trying to recover from the eye so he can give Cotto a rematch to their 2008 classic, but the doctors won't even clear him to spar yet.
Cotto's promoter Bob Arum has stated to boxingscene.com that he is considering pitting Cotto against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KO's).
The fight would be for Chavez's WBC middleweight (160 lbs) world championship belt, assuming Chavez beats Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO's) on June 4, 2011.
Cotto would be aiming to become the first Puerto Rican to win a world title in a fourth weight class.
Margarito's eye problems have already delayed his fight with Cotto once from July to September.
Now even that date has come under question as to its likelihood, hence Cotto vs Chavez is considered.
One problem that may occur is Sergio Martinez (47-2-2, 26 KO's) may block the fight from being done.
Martinez has first dibs on Chavez if he beats Zbik. He has said he will petition the WBC to strip him of his title if he decides not to fight him.
Arum will likely have a solution to this issue, but first Chavez MUST win in June or this option is obviously off the table.
