Strikeforce's Scott Coker on Gilbert Melendez vs. Frankie Edgar: Let's Get It On

Nick CaronApr 10, 2011

Is a fight featuring Gilbert Melendez vs. Frankie Edgar already in the works? The Strikeforce Lightweight Champion called out the UFC Lightweight Champion after the fight and may now have support from his promotion’s CEO.

A successful event at Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley event saw both the promotion’s Lightweight Champion, Gilbert Melendez, and its Welterweight Champion, Nick Diaz, successfully defend their titles.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker insists that there are still fights for both Melendez and Diaz in the promotion recently purchased by Zuffa.

“Justin Wilcox will fight Jorge Masvidal, and the winner maybe fights Gilbert,” Coker revealed.

But as both Melendez and Diaz continue their dominance over their respective divisions, fans and experts are growing increasingly anxious to see the two men get an increase in competition.

Many are clamoring for the two champions to fight against opponents in what most consider to be considerably more “stacked” divisions in the UFC.

Coker stopped short of saying that it was anything close to a done deal, but a potential showdown between Strikeforce’s Lightweight Champion, Gilbert Melendez, and the UFC’s Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar, is seeming more and more likely.

“If we could get this thing going in parallel, and that big fight could happen with Frankie, let’s get it on,” he said.

The upcoming months will tell us quite a bit on whether this dream fight is a legitimate possibility, but it seems that both Coker and Melendez are ready to see the 155-pound champion get a shot at Frankie Edgar.
