MMA Knockout of the Day: Seth Petruzelli Stops the Kimbo Slice Hype Train

Sal DeRoseMar 20, 2011

In about 13 seconds, Seth Petruzelli managed to do a ton of damage. Not only did he beat Kimbo Slice he stopped his hype train, helped EliteXC lose millions of dollars, and stunned a crowd of 9,414 people in Sunrise, Fla.

Slice was heavily hyped and favored going into his fight against Petruzelli. The fight was originally slated to be a showdown between Slice and Ken Shamrock, but due to an injury in training to Shamrock, he was forced to withdraw.

Petruzelli literally took this fight hours before it began.

So the fight went on and Slice rushed Petruzelli quickly out of the gate, leaving his chin fully exposed and, well, Petruzelli took the advantage and knocked Slice right on the button, sending him to the mat. Petruzelli quickly ran to throw as many punches as he could on the downed Slice and won by TKO.

As a Slice fan at the time, my jaw dropped and so did those of many casual fans who watched Slice grow up from YouTube street brawler to MMA sensation.

But now we know better than to think Slice is a credible MMA fighter. Maybe he could be a boxer, but never an MMA fighter.

After the fight, Petruzelli made accusations that he was offered money to keep the fight standing and later went back on his claims.

Since this fight, Kimbo has made an appearance on the UFC's The Ultimate Fighter 10 and lost to Roy Nelson early on by TKO.

Kimbo then went on to beat Houston Alexander at the TUF 10 Finale and all seemed good for Slice.

Then he lost via TKO to Matt Mitrione in the second round and was subsequently cut from the UFC.

Slice now is a professional wrestler in Japan and was supposed to make his debut in February but couldn't due to injury.

Petruzelli went on to have two fights in the UFC and lost both fights after winning his first two fights after the Kimbo slaying. He now fights on April 22 at WEF 46 in Orlando, Fla.
