WWE Analysis: R-Truth's Lost Potential...The Truth That Could Have Been

Tyson JonesMar 8, 2011

Before I get into this, let me just say this is not a "My favorite Superstar isn't getting pushed," thing, but more a "If this happened, he could have been pushed," thing. Though I will say, I am a fan of the man. Now, on to the article.

In 2010, at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view, John Cena lost a match to Wade Barrett. This loss resulted in Cena becoming a member of The Nexus and forced to do Wade Barrett's bidding. Also during this time, a little less important side note was semi-developed with R-Truth.

R-Truth was seen in backstage segments trying to persuade Cena to quit, rather then remain a lackey to Wade Barrett and The Nexus. Now, this is just a thought, but even when you're doing something you don't enjoy, I doubt a friend would want you to outright quit. Not unless he had something to gain from you leaving anyway.

John continued to serve The Nexus for awhile, while R-Truth's biggest involvement was winning a tag team match with Orton against Nexus a few weeks before the big Free of Fired travesty that took place at that year's Survivor Series. After that, we heard nothing more between Cena and Truth. Opportunity wasted, in my opinion.

I remember, before Truth came back to WWE, he had a few videos up where he claimed to be having some internet beef with John Cena, and even claimed Cena's gimmick was supposed to be his. Many other things were said, but those two are the ones that interested me most. Granted when Truth returned to WWE, he was on SmackDown, but I believe when he'd been drafted to RAW WWE could have very well come up with an interesting feud to elevate The Rapping Superstar. Scenario:

Cena returns to Monday Night RAW after defeating Barrett at TLC. While Cena is in the ring talking about his intentions to win The Royal Rumble, he's interrupted by non other than R-Truth, this time coming out to Right Time, instead of What's Up. Truth begins by talking about how he is glad John Cena is back and pretends to be happy, but the minute Cena lowers his guard, Truth drops him with...I don't know I suppose What's Up is the best option. (Alicia Fox uses The Scissors Kick and I don't see The Lie Detector as a standard finishing move. Maybe something to pull out a quick one in, but back to the main topic.)

Truth can then explain his actions next week as Plan B. Plan A was getting Cena to leave on his own. He can go on to say, he's sick of being overlooked and took a tip from Nexus and went after the face of RAW: John Cena. Over the next few weeks, Truth can have a couple of matches with John Morrison and maybe have a run in or two with Cena, ending at the Royal Rumble. The feud could have continued into Elimination Chamber (a match, I think should have gone to John Morrison,) as everyone in the match had a rival except two—Cena and Truth. Morrison had Sheamus, and Punk had Orton.

I'm not saying WWE should give him the WWE Title (I will say he'd make a good U.S. Champion again and maybe even WHC.) What I'm saying is, WWE wasted a great opportunity to do something new with a relatively stale superstar in R-Truth. That said, perhaps WWE feels R-Truth is too old to do anything new with, despite the fact, in my opinion, he moves pretty well for a near 40-year-old. Whatever the case, I just feel WWE missed out.
