Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito In June at the New Meadowlands Stadium?

In July of 2008, Mexican welterweight (147 lbs) boxer Antonio Margarito stopped Puerto Rican superstar Miguel Cotto in round eleven of their action-packed event. The fight was heralded for being a pulsating back and forth affair.

One fight later, Margarito was caught with his training team attempting to load illegal handwraps into his gloves.

Since then, Margarito's victory over Cotto has come into question.

Now, Miguel Cotto is the light middleweight (154 lbs) World Champion and is set to fight Nicaraguan fighter Ricardo Mayorga on March 12, but many are looking forward to a rematch against Margarito.

Bob Arum, who promotes both Cotto and Margarito, is looking to stage the rematch this June at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Madison Square Garden is undergoing renovations, which will leave it unavailable to host the fight this summer. Either way, Cotto has proven to be a big ticket-seller in the New York area.

Margarito sustained heavy injuries to his eye socket, including a fractured orbital bone from his 12 round decision loss to Manny Pacquiao in November of last year.

Devon Alexander vs. Lucas Matthysse in Talks for June in St. Louis

Devon Alexander's run of 21 straight victories came to an end by technical decision against Timothy Bradley this past January in an unification match for the (140 lbs) junior welterweight world titles.

Alexander has searched for a comeback opponent after this disappointing defeat. Argentine fighter Lucas Matthysse has been presented an offer to fight in St. Louis sometime in June. Matthysse welcomes the challenge from the former World Champion, he just doesn't agree with fighting in Alexander's hometown.

His concerns may be justifiable considering that the last fight Alexander had in St. Louis, Alexander may have been given an unfair advantage. Andreas Kotelnik, according to many viewers, outboxed Alexander, but the judges scorecards didn't represent what the viewers saw. They instead chose to award the bout to the native son.

Matthysse's punching power may be the difference in this fight. 26 of his 28 wins came by knockout, with his only loss was via decision to Zab Judah near Judah's hometown.

In the fight against Judah, Matthysse hurt him with the few punches he threw, but never followed up on what many observers had seen as a potential knockout had more effort been exerted.

If he lets his hands go as he did in a recent knockout win over Demarcus Corley, Matthysse won't need a judge to score his next bout.
