The Future: Who Will Be the Next Icon of the WWE?

0 of 13

Hello, Bleachers! This is my first article, so please give me some constructive feedback. If it's horrible, just tell me it is; I'll strive to improve.

Anyway, love him or hate him, John Cena is the current icon of the WWE. I grew up watching the Attitude Era and watching the Rock "layeth the Smackdown" and Austin 3:16.

Since the torch has been passed on to Cena, I've always wondered, based on the up and coming crop of superstars, who will Cena pass the torch to?

I'll score my picks based on four criteria:

    Mic Skill

    In Ring Ability

    Charisma

    Current Gimmick

1. The Miz

1 of 13

    Mic Skills : 9

    In Ring Ability : 6

    Charisma : 8

    Current Gimmick : 9

    Total : 32

All the Miz haters will definitely give me some flak for giving him such high scores but let's not forget, he sells the most merchandise following Cena and the Nexus. I reckon he has decent mic skills but they are slightly overrated, everything he says seems rather repetitive and let's face it, I'm awesome isn't the best catchphrase we know. But he has had a decent reign so far as a heel so let's give him some credit for that. His limited in-ring ability will only take him so far as a one or two-time champion and I doubt the Miz will ever be the icon of the WWE.

2. John Morrison

2 of 13

    Mic Skills : 4

    In Ring Ability : 10

    Charisma : 8

    Current Gimmick : 9

    Total : 31

Ah, the Shaman of Sexy. He has the unquestionable ability to entertain in the ring but he's just lacking that X factor (and mic skills) that is needed to be at the apex of the WWE. His mic skills are terrible but work could be done to improve it and if he starts to deliver decent promos, we could well see him challenging for the title on a regular basis. If anyone noticed, JoMo gets awesome pops as compared to many others in today's WWE, which is a sign of an icon in the making.

3. Alberto Del Rio

3 of 13

    Mic Skills : 10

    In Ring Ability : 10

    Charisma : 9

    Current Gimmick : 10

    Total : 39

Alberto Del Rio has risen from strength to strength since debuting as the Mexican JBL. Before you comment on the 10 for mic skills, note that I'm comparing him to the superstars who are currently in the WWE, not the Rock or Stone Cold. He is technically very proficient, more of the grapple and submission style as compared to Morrison but make no mistake, most of the matches involving Del Rio are always entertaining. Plus, when was the last time we saw the Arm Bar as a finisher? Del Rio is definitely THE heel of the WWE right now but he is some way off John Cena and Randy Orton.

4. Kofi Kingston

4 of 13

    Mic Skills : 8

    In Ring Ability : 10

    Charisma : 8

    Current Gimmick : 7

    Total : 33

I know most of the IWC are extremely high on Kofi and for good reason. He has a highly-entertaining style of wrestling. In my opinion, Kofi has severely underrated mic skills and should be given more promo opportunities. He could also do with a better gimmick and perhaps a heel turn? His controlled aggression should be unleashed to see if it can take him furthur than the IC title.

5. Cody Rhodes

5 of 13

    Mic Skills : 9

    In Ring Ability : 9

    Charisma : 9

    Current Gimmick : 9

    Total : 36

I am extremely high on this guy and believe he has what it takes to make it to the very top. Don't his commercials make you want to change channels? That's exactly the reaction that a heel should get. Rey also hand-picked him as his wrestlemania opponent and that match has the potential to steal the show. Plus, Cody Rhodes has the ability to win over the female crowd, which Vinnie Mac would most definitely love.

6. Sheamus

6 of 13

    Mic Skills: Eight

    In Ring Ability: Nine

    Charisma: Six

    Current Gimmick: Seven

    Total: 30

Don't let the colour of his complexion fool you, Sheamus is a beast of a man, and his style of wrestling may not be as flashy as Jomo's, but they both deliver equally good matches. Sheamus' mic skills are reasonably good, but he doesn't really get any sort of reaction from the crowd. Something's got to change before he can challenge for the WWE title legitimately and hopefully hold on to it this time. I can't see Sheamus as the icon of the WWE at all to be honest.

7. Daniel Bryan

7 of 13

    Mic Skills: Eight

    In Ring Ability: 10

    Charisma: Six

    Current Gimmick: Six

    Total: 30

This IWC darling may have scored the same as King Sheamus, but his potential is far greater. Daniel Bryan is stuck with a horrible gimmick, and his lack of actual charisma doesn't help. He needs to be involved in a proper feud rather than being stuck in between Gail Kim and the Bellas. In the ideal world, I would let him feud with Y2J simply because they are the best technical wrestlers in the WWE, and Y2J could very well push Daniel Bryan to much greater heights.

8. Wade Barrett

8 of 13

    Mic Skills: 10

    In Ring Ability: Eight

    Charisma: Nine

    Current Gimmick: Nine

    Total : 36

The ex-leader of the Nexus and current "member" of the Corre is scored so highly because he simply deserves it. He is another example of the perfect heel, and he can deliver fantastic promos. His in-ring ability is pretty impressive, but I wouldn't put him in the same bracket as Del Rio or Daniel Bryan. To bring him to the next level, I think he needs to shine individually rather than being in Nexus or the Corre, and Barrett could be the next face of the WWE.

9. Drew McIntyre

9 of 13

    Mic Skills: Seven

    In Ring Ability: Eight

    Charisma: Seven

    Current Gimmick: Seven

    Total : 29

The Chosen One seems to be slightly lost as of late. He had an impressive showing in the Elimination Chamber PPV, but since he wasn't in the last two, it doesn't do anything to boost his status. Even though the Chosen One is his gimmick, Alberto Del Rio seems to be the one pulling it off with much greater success. Drew needs to hold on to some form of silverware (Tag Team Titles don't count!) and retain them cleanly to prove his ability to hold his own and take it from there, but I still cannot fathom how Drew can become an icon.

10. Dolph Zigger

10 of 13

    Mic Skills: Six

    In Ring Ability: Nine

    Charisma: Six

    Current Gimmick: Eight

    Total : 29

Considering that Dolph once debuted under the failed gimmick of the spirit squad, it would be safe to say his current one as Vickie's boyfriend is brilliant. I scored him low on charisma because I strongly believed he wouldn't be anywhere as close to where he is now without Vickie. That being said, he has the ability to put on five-star matches; just think about his feud with Kofi. Still, Dolph as the icon of the WWE doesn't do it for me.

11. Ted DiBiase

11 of 13

    Mic Skills: six

    In Ring Ability: Eight

    Charisma: Six

    Current Gimmick: Six

    Total : 26

The son of the Million Dollar Man is currently stuck in mid card hell and is teasing a feud with Daniel Bryan. I personally think that Bryan deserves better, and he should just hand the US title to Ted and join the hunt for the WWE title. DiBiase's mic skills are above average, but not Del Rio or Wade's standard, and besides his family tree, he really has nothing much that convinces me that he should be a top face or heel in the WWE.

12. Justin Gabriel

12 of 13

    Mic Skills: Six

    In Ring Ability: 10

    Charisma: Six

    Current Gimmick: Six

    Total: 28

Justin Gabriel is in a bad gimmick, plain and simple. The whole IWC is screaming for him to turn face, and I'm afraid I agree whole-heartedly. At least he's holding on to the tag titles after his rematch on RAW. I still think he would make a very entertaining singles competitor, and despite his below average mic skills, I can definitely see Gabriel being very over with the crowd.
