Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker Already Has Fedor Emelianenko's Next Fight in Mind

Sal DeRoseFeb 15, 2011

It really didn't take long for Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker to have heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko's next fight already planned out.

Fedor is Coker's biggest promotion tool. Losing him would be a big hit for Strikeforce, but at the same time it's a necessary move.

In an interview with Ariel Helwani on MMA Hour, Coker gave his idea for Fedor.

"If the fighter doesn't want to fight you're not gonna want him to fight," Coker said. "If the fighter doesn't want to fight the promoter doesn't make him fight. And if he wants to retire then it's time to walk away. But I don't think that's the case... and I think the loser of Overeem and Werdum, that would be a great fight for Fedor."

If Fedor retires, as he should, this is a complete and total non-story. But, it seems Coker expects Fedor to return for one last fight against a guy who sent his career into this downward spiral (Fabricio Werdum), or against a guy who could do what Antonio Silva did to him on Saturday in the form of Alistair Overeem.

Coker really expects Fedor to step back in one more time.

"I'm sure he wasn't feeling good and he said, 'Hey, is this really worth it?'" Coker said about Fedor's post-fight interview after his loss to Silva. "But I have no doubt he will be back."

Just a word to the wise Scott, Fedor looks done. If you're going to have a guy who is a good 30 pounds less then the guy he's fighting and a good amount of difference in height and reach fight, don't even attempt it.

Move Fedor to light heavyweight if you want him to still fight. Fedor isn't managed by the best of people nor does it seem like he puts in an extreme amount of time towards his training anymore.

It's yet to be seen though if this fight indeed does go down, what if Fedor has to face Overeem? Is it for his title?

It seems Coker had expected Fedor to make it to the finals and win the Grand Prix in order to get the Strikeforce dream fight of Overeem and Fedor.

Well Scott, after Saturday night it really doesn't seem like Fedor would win.
