WWE's 2/21/11 Promo: Potential Arrival Of Sting? I've Got The Update

Joe Burgett Senior Writer IIIFebruary 1, 2011

If you saw WWE Monday Night RAW last night, you saw a short vignette with a mysterious figure in a trench coat walking on a rainy set.

First indication to some was, hey, looks like a new Superstar is coming. But, many are thinking because of everything involved with the promo, that the mysterious figure is none other than "The ICON" Sting.

Going back to 2001, when the WWE did the ECW/WCW Invasion angle once Vince McMahon bought WCW, many WCW talents came into the company.

Big names such as DDP, Booker T and others came in and many figured that it was only a matter of time before Sting came in.

The issue was that Sting didn't trust how he'd be used in the WWE as a part of the Invasion angle; shortly after it started, Vinny Mac called Sting up and offered a nice pay plan for the Stinger, and Sting even talks about how Vince was going to be really good to him in the money side of things.

However, because he wanted to keep his legend HIS way, he didn't join WWE. Instead, just a short while later, he joined a budding wrestling organization known as TNA Wrestling, where he was under contract until a few months ago.

By the way, for what it's worth, his no-compete, if he had one, would expire this month.

Sting is widely expected to sign back with TNA, seeing as he has had a good relationship with Dixie Carter and Jeff Jarrett. But the issue is that he has been vocal about his opinions of Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff, like many past WCW stars.

Sting wasn't a fan of how things happened in WCW, but that is the same story with just about every former WCW star. So, Sting is not alone.

Kevin Nash and Booker T bolted to World Wrestling Entertainment this past weekend, and many believed they were going to re-sign with TNA as well. But as we saw, they did not.

Sting is speculated to do so as well, but many believe he wants to retire, and in his last run, he wants to do something he hasn't yet done, and that is compete in WWE.

As we saw by the promo, if it is Sting, he would be debuting in late February. This right before the biggest set-up to WrestleMania, which would allow him to come in and have a possible match and be a member of the WWE Hall of Fame.

No man has ever gone into the HOF without being involved with the WWE in some way, whether it was wrestling, appearing or announcing—no one has just gone in without a WWE background of some sort.

This is probably why Sting would appear in the late set-up to Mania and could have a match or two with them before hanging up his boots.

Vince McMahon months ago was said to have had three potential huge WrestleMania storylines involving someone out of WWE. Obviously if he was able to get Sting in, that would be the one he went with.

And Sting would receive a very handsome payday if he came in. Plus, Vinny Mac has been trying for months to bring Sting in anyway, so you know money is no object, it's just how he's used, most likely.

Some believe the figure is not Sting, but The Undertaker. However, this is a promo for RAW and Taker wouldn't have a massive set-up like this, seeing as he hasn't in the past four to five returns.

Plus, WWE wouldn't do a mysterious type of angle with the Deadman, because it makes no sense. They'd have something that seemed to obviously be the return of The Undertaker. Such as him coming out of the grave.

Let's not forget, he was last buried alive in his last appearance. There would have to be some indication he is out. The promo we saw had nothing to do with that.

Sources are saying that the Sting/WWE merger if you will, is very likely, but only Vinny Mac and a small group of tight-lipped people know who it really is, and they aren't talking.

So, we're really going to have to wait to see who it is. However, for what it's worth, Sting has not yet signed with TNA, despite the fact an offer has been on the table for months. And he'd have an automatic storyline upon his return with them.

So, if Sting wasn't the mysterious figure, one would think he would have already signed back with TNA. Guess we'll see.

By the way, the picture above has been circling around the 'net all morning. Very interesting, thought I'd throw it up. I couldn't put the full pic up because of the cropping issue with B/R sadly. Ask me and I'll PM the full one or e-mail it.

According to NY Daily News, Sting has signed a one year deal with World Wrestling Entertainment
