Brett Favres of the WWE: 15 Wrestlers Who Need to Retire

Robert AitkenJan 10, 2011

From the way that Brett Favre handled his legacy in the past few years, he has gone from a lovable iron man to an annoying old man past his prime that we have seen too much of (whether he sent you text messages or not). In the same breath, there are athletes all across sports entertainment that are trying to squeeze that last little bit of youth out of their careers. I'm looking at you, TNA...

Even still, there are some athletes within WWE that are yet to hang up their boots and should think about doing so soon. Here are 15 wrestlers who should think about planning their retirements, in no particular order.

William Regal

1 of 15

Age: 42

I know that he has already stated his retirement is coming but he is still active and qualifies for the list. He has wrestled for literally decades and hasn't had a run with a title in a long time.

He has taught countless superstars that have come through WWE, more recently Daniel Bryan, so his impact will be felt for years to come. I would love to see Regal become a trainer of sorts in FCW or the returning Tough Enough.

Mark Henry

2 of 15

Age: 39

Mark Henry is a far cry from the World's Strongest Man that he used to be. At this point, he needs to be used to get young talent over, much like when he suffered The Wasteland at the hands of Wade Barrett. He needs to use his knowledge to pass the torch to the next generation, such as NXT rookie Brodus Clay.

As I type, Mark Henry is in a tag team match on RAW with Daniel Bryan against Tyson Kidd and Ted DiBiase. His team wins. Who do you think got the pinfall? Gotta love when they pay attention...

R-Truth

3 of 15

Age: 38 (39 on Jan. 19)

R-Truth has a bad gimmick and a worse position on the roster for someone at his age. R-Truth will not be a world champion in WWE, so the idea that he is in the mix of those who are on the verge of a main event push is ridiculous.

His name has even been in the neighborhood of those to watch in recent years. His wrestling ability is very limited and he is unable to really teach anything to the younger wrestlers.

Undertaker

4 of 15

Age: 45

The Undertaker has been used so sparingly over the past few years that if you never watched a pay-per-view, you would hardly know if The Undertaker was still with the company. Outside of WrestleMania, it is hard to really root for 'Taker in any big matches.

If he wins a title, he won't be seen on television often with his loose travel schedule. When he loses a title, you have to wonder if they wanted him to lose it or if he was injured and had to vacate it. The Undertaker has gradually become a liability to the company.

Kane

5 of 15

Age: 43

I'm happy to see that Kane was given the world championship run that he was always deserved, especially after his mask and his momentum have been stripped from him in the past decade.

A man who was never given a real chance until he was given a gimmick based off of The Undertaker, Kane has parlayed that all into a great career. While he can still wrestle at a high level, I'm forced to question what the point will be if he will just float in the area of the world title without any payoff.

Big Show

6 of 15

Age: 38

Big Show has had a career based solely off of him being a huge man and has been a huge star because of it. However, the end of the career of Big Show consists of him putting over the new generation of talent.

His feud with Wade Barrett will likely give Wade that push that he couldn't obtain from his feud with John Cena. My only hope is that this year, Big Show will persue his acting career more and leave wrestling to stay out of the main event.

Goldust

7 of 15

Age: 41

This one pains me because I am a Goldust fan. I follow him on Twitter and I received his book for Christmas. At his age, he isn't around to win any championships but only to teach the young guys in the back and put on great matches to boost the credibility of others.

I would love to see Goldust wrestle still because I know that he is in the best state of his life, both physically and mentally. I want to see Goldust as a head writer, like his father Dusty Rhodes, or an owner of a wrestling school. Regardless, I will never forget the name of (big deep breath) Goldust...

Jerry Lawler

8 of 15

Age: 61

Lawler can still wrestle, which we all knew already. However, I don't see him having any place in the main event. A man who has never been WWE Champion shouldn't be defeating the WWE Champion consistently in his 60s. The sad part is that his wrestling is better than his commentary is lately.

Maybe I'm sounding like a Cole-Miner here, but I think that Jerry Lawler needs to stop stealing the spotlight and take himself out of the main event.

Triple H

9 of 15

Age: 41

We all know how legendary of a career that Triple H has had whether he wrestles another match or not. However, I would be perfectly content if Triple H retires from wrestling matches pretty soon.

Vince McMahon won't be around forever. Shane McMahon has left the company. With Stephanie not taking as much of a hands-on approach as before, it will likely be up to Triple H to show some leadership backstage and become a face of the company in terms of administration.

The Great Khali

10 of 15

Age: 38

Yes, he is still a member of WWE. I've found it very difficult to like The Great Khali from the very beginning. At this point, his best way out may be to never officially return.

Chavo Guerrero

11 of 15

Age: 40

Chavo Guerrero was a great wrestler for many years. However, most of his appeal faded away when WWE dropped the cruiserweight division and his uncle Eddie tragically passed away. Ever since, Chavo has just kind of stayed around.

I think that Chavo could never fully disappear from wrestling but being a jobber to young and old alike is a job that could be maintained by anyone. It is certainly not an ideal place for a Guerrero to be.

Finlay

12 of 15

Age: 51

He's still listed as an active wrestler, despite being mainly a behind-the-scenes presence. Regardless, he is seen occasionally and it counts.

Hornswoggle

13 of 15

Age: 24 (unsure what that translates to in leprechaun years)

It was cute at first, especially when he was specifically a manager for Finlay. However, now it's just odd and I want him to just go away. Between being Mr. McMahon's bastard son, being the mascot for DX and being the spy for Teddy Long on Smackdown, it has just gotten out of hand.

It's bad enough that we can pin him for being the David Arquette of the cruiserweight championship, but to still keep him around when his gimmick has ran its course and then some is just obnoxious.

Rey Mysterio

14 of 15

Age: 36

Mysterio has won two more world championships than he likely should have. He is still billed as the ultimate underdog, despite the fact that we know he will be booked more generously than perhaps any other superstar of this generation.

I will never doubt Mysterio's toughness, but he has been injured way too much to be considered in such a high regard anymore. He needs to look at Evan Bourne, Justin Gabriel and the other great young high-flyers in the company and pass the torch. Mysterio barely has a leg to stand on anymore and should limp out of the business while he still can.

Edge

15 of 15

Age: 37

Edge shouldn't even be wrestling anymore, but he is. Right now, he is on top of the business as the World Heavyweight Champion. With all of his credentials, Edge is a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame.

As a 10-time world champion, is there much more for Edge to stick around for? He has won literally every championship that he could, has been King of the Ring, won Royal Rumble and won the first Money in the Bank ladder match.

His health is a major issue and every match Edge goes through makes many wrestling fans worried that this would be the last one Edge could compete in. For the sake of any good health that Edge could still possibly have, he needs to get out of the business when he can. There's no shame in leaving when there is nothing left to prove.
