Happy (belated) New Year, Bleachers!
I'm back with a new article after something that occurred recently has me a little bit bothered. So, without further ado, let's get to it...
First, to recap—this past Monday on RAW, Melina appeared for a six-diva tag team match with Maryse and Alicia Fox. Their opponents were Divas champion Natalya, Eve and Brie Bella (with Nikki Bella, who eventually pulled "Twin Magic," hiding in wait under the ring).
Maryse ended up doing the majority of the wrestling for the heel team, which surprised me because I figured Melina, as the No. 1 contender for the Divas Championship, would do that...or at least have a bigger role than the one she was given in reality.
The Paparazzi Princess did get involved when Nikki Bella made a tag to Natalya. As the third-generation diva was cleaning house in the ring, Melina grabbed her in the ropes from behind, then a moment later grabbed her ankle.
The distraction proved to be nothing more effective than a fly buzzing around in the face of a horse.
When Melina finally got her chance in the match, it was nothing—literally nothing—and she didn't get to perform even one move.
Natalya tagged Eve into the match for the first time, and she took it upon herself to grab the No. 1 contender and ever-so-reluctantly perform her odd-looking swinging neckbreaker finish. Apparently, it was enough to put Melina away for the win.
Now, this is what doesn't make any sense. Why have Melina lose in mere seconds at the hands of a diva who not only isn't the champion, but isn't receiving any sort of push at the moment?
Plus, the real kicker was that Eve did ONE whole move on her and took so long to do it that it was unconvincing that Melina couldn't have fought her way out before she performed it!
This shows WWE's usual lack of consistency and just plain, old ridiculousness. Why squash Melina's momentum in such a horrible manner? Hell, even if it were the amazing Gail Kim in the match, performing one move to defeat her, it would still be awful.
Why wasn't Natalya the one to put Melina away? I know Eve had to have her moment in the match—although WWE are notorious for having diva tag matches and having some parties completely miss getting physically involved—but couldn't she and Melina have had a little back and forth, exchanging maneuvers for a minute or two, at the very least?
Also, the Divas champion should have been the one to put the Paparazzi diva away.
After all, let's not forget that Melina effortlessly won that triple-threat match to become new No. 1 contender a couple of weeks earlier, and that said match involved Eve (even though she wasn't the one pinned).
In my opinion, the only thing that can rectify this injustice is that Melina have a solo match against Eve next week on RAW.
Have her utilize a massive array of her signature moves during the bout, toying with her all throughout, and then dish out a beat down after she defeats her.
Then, have Natalya run out to make the save for Eve...but Melina runs out of the ring and out of harm's way in an instant.
It looks to be the only way she can redeem herself after what went down on Monday.
