This Year's Boise State in College Football: Tulsa Golden Huricanne

JB McCandlesAug 27, 2008

Two years ago it was Boise State who went 13-0 and won a BCS bowl game. It was one of the greatest games in college football history. Last year it was Hawaii who went 12-1. Hawaii went undefeated and was selected for a BSC bowl game, but failed to complete the undefeated season. So who will be this years mid-major that goes undefeated? Well they may not go undefeated, but they will be ranked amongst the best in the nation: Tulsa.

Tulsa is returning 15 starters from a team that won 10 games last year. Tulsa had the number one ranked offense in the land last year and will probably do it again this year. Although Tulsa lost QB Paul Smith they will still have a dominant offense. If anything is to stop Tulsa from going undefeated it is their defense.

On offense senior QB David Johnson will get majority of the snaps. Tulsa returns its top two rushers from last year: Tarrion Adams and Courtney Tennial. Tennial is coming back this year after suffering an Achilles injury last year. Tulsa has a veteran line to protect Johnson.

On defense Tulsa allowed 40 points in six of their games last year. It is a problem that will need to be taken care of. The defensive attack will be led by LB Mike Bryan and LB Tanner Antle. On the line it will be Morton Hopkins. If the defense can create more turnovers the team will win more games. Tulsa is an offensive ball club and one turnover could change the game for Tulsa.

Tulsa has week one off to begin the year and then they will play 11 games in 11 weeks. Tulsa will play 5 home games in 6 weeks and 4 road games in 5 weeks. They will host UCF and play Marshall on the road. The challenge in the conference schedule is playing at Houston. The non conference schedule posts some interesting match ups. Tulsa hosts New Mexico and will have to travel to Arkansas in a true test for their program.

Tulsa will be successful on offense, but the weakness' on the defense could be overwhelming and could cost this ball club some games. Some insteresting stats:
In 2007 Tulsa was outscored 170 to 154 in the second quarter.
In 2007 Tulsa had 43 passing touchdowns and their opponents had only 28.
In 2007 Tulsa's offense averaged 542 yards a game and their opponents averaged 469 against them.

Will Tulsa go undefeated? I don't believe they will, but in a couple years it is a strong possibility. I predict another 10 win season for Tulsa and they will win Conference USA.
