The Tostitos Fiesta Bowl

IconTo say that any of this year's college football upsets is greater than another is like trying to say that any sin is greater than another. According to the Bible they are all the same, so reason tells me that all upsets are the same as well.

But, just like sin had its beginning in the Garden of Eden with Eve turning the world upside down, you could say the same about Boise State in the Tostitos' Fiesta Bowl.

Boise had a nice story—they were only the second team from a non-BCS Conference to ever make a BCS Bowl. But, they were playing the big, bad Oklahoma Sooners with Adrian Peterson and a vaunted defense. They were not supposed to come within 20 points.

It seems like Boise didn't get the message though. They came out in their rather ugly orange pants, which really made the way they played the game that much more beautiful. Although in reality, for the most part it was a smashmouth, drag-it-out kind of game—just the way Boise likes it. They had good hard-nosed defense and smashmouth power football on offense.

Boise did this so well, they led Oklahoma 28-10 in the third quarter, but Oklahoma came storming back to tie the game up with about a minute to play. Boise still had a minute to go down the field and attempt to win the game in regulation, when quarterback Jared Zabransky seemingly ended any hopes of an upset when he a threw a duck to the outside on a deep out route that the Oklahoma cornerback jumped on and returned to the house for the winning touchdown.

Apparently the Sooners forgot that Boise was undefeated and had been in this situation before. Zabransky and company responded, at least when it became fourth and 18. That's when Zabransky threw a square-in pass two yards short of the first down, but the Boise receiver flipped it to a teammate who took it the rest of the way for the tying touchdown.

That was probably the play of the year, until OT, when after scoring a matching TD on a fourth and two receiver pass, Boise did the unthinkable and went for the win. They lined up with three receivers to the right side and Zabransky set to throw, but instead faked it with the ball in his left hand and RB Ian Johnson took it and walked into the endzone for the winning score.

As if the game couldn't get any crazier, he then went and proposed to his girlfriend, a BSU Cheerleader.

So you could make the claim there were greater moments in the sports world this past year. I know from my perspective, I was thrilled when the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup, the Saints made it to the NFC Championship Game, and the Cubs made the playoffs, but nothing compared to the weekly upsets in college football, which you could say really began with Boise State on the very first day of 2007.
