Tottenham Hotspur Fans Have Seen It All Before
We're two weeks into the new 2008/2009 English Premier League season, but not everything has changed.
Just ask the Tottenham Hotspur fans who see their beloved Spurs pointless after two games. This time last season Spurs were being tipped for greatness but after a poor start (similar to this campaign) the White Hart Lane club soldiered onto a bottom half finish after Jaunde Ramos replaced Dutchman Martin Jol.
After winning the Carling Cup last season and improving under the Spaniard, Ramos, Spurs were again expected to have a successful season and maybe even pushĀ on to a top four finish.
Hell, I even said so myself.
Sadly though, I'm here to take it all back.
Having watched Spurs sell, sell, and sell great players like Robbie Keane, Steed Malbranque, and Pascal Chimbonda. I now watch the Dimitar Berbatov saga with a wry smile on my face.
How could any club get it so wrong?
If Spurs really believed they could make it into the top four why were they selling such quality players? Most of whom they have not replaced.
You need a squad to compete with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United.
A great starting eleven is brilliant but this is a squad game.
On the opening game of the season they lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough before losing 2-1 at home to Sunderland last weekend.
It must really suck to be a Spurs fan again.
I must admit the selections have puzzled me. InĀ the last game Tottenham played one up with David Bentley behind. The game before he played left midfield.
Didn't they pay Blackburn Rovers £16 million for a right winger?
Aaron Lennon is a great little player but he can't cross so he's not going to be less effective on the left is he? Get Bentley back on the right and get the crosses into Darren Bent. It's his bread and butter!
Ramos blamed Berbatov for the beginning of the season slump but that is ridiculous. He's now been threatened with reserve football if you believe the daily papers.
As far as I'm concerned, he is still their best player and should be playing! Just tell him he can go to Manchester United when a deal is done but until then you are playing.
Spurs could have had points on the board already if they'd handled this situation properly. I don't like the way Spurs are run, it seems far too top heavy and itĀ could well be wrong to blame Ramos.
There is some good news for desperate Spurs fans worrying about another long season. Spartak Moscow's Roman Pavlyuchenko has announced he is moving to Spurs.
The 26-year-old Russian star hasn't spoken to Ramos and his club say a deal is yet to be signed, but he's pretty adamant he'll be a Spurs player in the very near future.
Is this just more Arshavin type speculation?
Maybe they'll get both, and, to be honest, they really need them!
As is always the case, Tottenham are being kicked while they're down and this weekend, the team doing the kicking will be Chelsea.
On current form I can't see anything but a Chelsea win.
Therefore this time next week, transfer window over and everyone preparing for the international break, Tottenham could very well find themselves rock bottom of the English Premier League.
