Rajon Rondo: Is the Boston Celtics' Star the NBA's Best Point Guard and MVP?
Throughout the preseason, Celtics fans caught a glimpse of Rajon Rondo's importance to the 2010-11 Celtics.
Through three regular season games, it clear that Rondo is EVERYTHING to the Celtics, making him the most valuable player to any team.
Last night against the New York Knicks, Rondo earned a spectacular triple-double, totaling 10 points, 10 rebounds and 24 assists!
His 24 assists are the second-most ever in a single game for a Celtics player, and he tied Isiah Thomas for the most assists ever in a triple-double performance.
Rondo's assists were well-spread. The only player to score for the Celtics last night that did not benefit from a Rondo assist was Nate Robinson.
"[Rondo] pretty much got everyone involved," said Pierce, who scored 25 points with 14 rebounds. "He got the popcorn man involved. He got the announcers involved. Everybody. It was beautiful to watch."
Rondo is no stranger to triple-doubles. He had several in the 2009 and 2010 playoffs, and is quickly becoming unguardable.
Rajon's unique ability to rebound for a point guard is quite similar to Magic Johnson. Most point guards collect rebounds of the bounce, but Rondo goes looking for rebounds.
Looking for the rebound is a risk, since the point guard should be the first line of defense, but Rondo does it so well that it doesn't hurt the Celtics.
The knock on Rondo is his lack of shooting ability, both from the field and the foul line. Three games into the season, Rondo is shooting 42 percent from the floor, which is not bad at all.
When comparing Rajon to other elite point guards, such as Deron Williams, Chris Paul and Derrick Rose, these three may be better scorers, but they can't compare with Rondo's defense and rebounding.
We know Rondo is a much better rebounder than the three guards mentioned above, but now he can pass the ball as well, if not better than those players.
Rondo is averaging two steals per game this season, which will keep him on pace to defend his steals crown from 2010, when he averaged 2.3 thefts per game and garnered an all-NBA first team defense honor.
Rondo is the successor to Magic Johnson's point guard style, not LeBron James. Yes LeBron is more physically-built like Magic, but LeBron is not a point guard, and if he does play the point for the Miami Heat he is hurting his game.
Rondo is the only man in the NBA who can average a triple-double for an entire season, something that hasn't been done since Oscar Robertson decades ago.
There are many players who mean nearly everything to their team's success, like Kobe Bryant of the Lakers and Kevin Durant of the Thunder.
However, Rondo's presence is the difference between the Celtics being title contenders and fighting to make the playoffs, all while providing mass confusion on offense.
Rondo could score 20 points per game on most other teams, but that's not his duty for Boston.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers used practice Friday to discuss his player's roles, but Rondo knows his role: be the heartbeat, playmaker and MVP of the NBA's best team.
