Will Chelsea Win The Title This Season?

Nurfarhana MiskonAug 22, 2008

Stamford Bridge roared last Sunday after the so-called ā€œBlue Braziliansā€ had a convincing 4-0 victory against a hapless Portsmouth side.Ā  It was a dream start for new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari and new summer signing Deco.

Out of all the Big Four, Chelsea won easily at the Bridge with Nicolas Anelka, Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and new-boy Deco on target. Compared to their other three counterpart, in which Arsenal and Liverpool won their opening day fixtures with a rather lightweight victory against West Brom and Sunderland respectively.

Reigning champions, Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw against Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle with Obafemi Martins scored the surprising first goal at Old Trafford but until Darren Fletcher netted a header to equalise.

During pre-season, their rather worldly schedule did took a toll on their players but they played really well in China, Malaysia and also trash Carlo Ancelotti’s AC Milan with a good drubbing of 5-0 in Russia.

In pre-season, Scolari said that his main focus is to win all the four trophies, the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup and also the Carling Cup. Going for a quadruple has become a normal thing for every Chelsea manager.

Remember Jose Mourinho in the 2006/2007 season when he said that his Chelsea side were going to win all the major trophies, but in the end he got stuck with a Carling Cup and an FA Cup trophy. What happen to him then was history.

Going for four trophies is not easy, even Manchester United can’t do it back in 1999 when they won th e infamous treble. Such big words have come out of the mouth of Scolari but we shall wait and see if he becomes the first Chelsea manager to win all the four trophies this season.

The signing of Chelsea’s ace midfielder, Frank Lampard was crucial if Chelsea were to mount a title challenge this season but could the signing of Lampard be so beneficial? The English midfielder signed a five-year deal with the club and became the highest paid player in the Premier League with a salary of 151,000 pounds per week.

During the off-season, he toyed with Chelsea with a conspicuous idea to move to the San Siro so that he can be reunited with his former boss and also mentor, Jose Mourinho. The so-called transfer saga became not one of the interesting but worth reading about.Ā

But the question is will Chelsea win the title this season with a Brazilian who won the world Cup and manage a Portugese national side to the final of Euro 2004? Scolari has not been tested against one of the Big Four and it will be interesting to see how the Brazilian will cope against Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and Rafael Benitez respectively.

Ā After spending a large sum of his millions to hi club, looks like Roman Abramovich’s millions were put to good use this season. With the signing of Big Phil as their manager, the Blues should have a good season but it is not the time to judge whether they will be winning the title this season.
