Big Show's Current Status: An Obscure Path of Destruction with No Destination?
Hello, Buzzers. Buzz is back.
Among all recent feuds and storylines in WWE, one superstar really caught my attention. He is none other than the world's largest athlete—the Big Show.
Looking at the likes of Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan, Kane, and other superstars who had impressive wins and runs, you might think that I'm among the minority with my feelings. Some of you might have even raised an eyebrow by now.
First, I think it's fair to say that Big Show has been on quite a good run since last year. I'm not able to recall any major upset he had since his losses in his feud with John Cena, other than losing the tag-team titles during his separate times in Teams Jerishow and Shomiz.
Before moving to Smackdown, and during his last months on RAW, Big Show paired with Chris Jericho and the Miz on two different occasions.
First, he was announced as Jericho's new partner due to Edge's injury at that time. Together they formed the team of Jerishow, and held the Unified Tag-Team titles for several months before losing them to D-X.
This lead to a feud between the two teams, during which Jericho and Show had to part at the end due to Jericho being part of the Smackdown roster at that time.
After the split of Jerishow, Big Show paired with Miz, forming Team Shomiz, and was able to regain the championship belts. The team held the titles for four months before losing them to the Hart Dynasty on RAW. After the loss, Show knocked the Miz off with his fist.
During his time with those teams, Big Show was an effective member. However, what really caught my attention was his next run after moving to Smackdown.
Big Show was booked as a monster, but in my opinion, this run was useless and harmful to many superstars, including him.
It's not the first time we witnessed this unstoppable monster gimmick by Big Show. However, WWE used to have a purpose behind booking him this way during those times. They either tried to feature him as the untouchable giant who makes his way to the top as a champion, or they wanted him to look unbeaten in a feud against a rising superstar before ultimately losing to him and putting him over.
However, in his last feuds, there was no clear purpose behind all the squashing and destruction we were watching. It only made us feel as if WWE were passing victims to Big Show just to create filler matches.
The first superstar to feud with Big Show on Smackdown was then-World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger. Before this feud, Swagger wasn't really booked as a strong champion, but he still managed to win cleanly.
However, ever since this feud began, Swagger hasn't been the same. He was dominated and crushed in most segments and confrontations between the two superstars. He even lost at Over the Limit by disqualification. One month later, and again after some few angles with Big Show, Swagger lost his title at Fatal Four-Way after Rey Mysterio pinned him for the win.
So what was the point behind this feud? How did it benefit Swagger and Big Show?
Swagger only looked so weak and couldn't even manage to win.
As for Big Show, it looked unfair for him not to get a rematch against Swagger. You might say that he was added to the Fatal Four-Way match, but I don't consider being in a contest were you could lose without being involved as a rematch.
Had they made a rematch between the two on Smackdown prior to Fatal Four-Way, this could have been better for both superstars.
Next, after Big Show failed to capture the World Title at Fatal Four-Way, he found himself involved in a feud on his road to Money in the Bank. This feud was against what was supposed to be a promising stable, the Straight-Edge Society. However, Show singlehandedly destroyed the group.
I know that Serena's release and Joey Mercury's injury added further damage to the stable, but Big Show was already humiliating and squashing them. He first unmasked CM Punk and Joey Mercury and made them look like jokes. Next, he defeated the three men in a handicap match at Summerslam.
The feud continued despite the instability that occurred inside SES group. Luke Gallows was fed to Big Show on several occasions before Night of Champions, where CM Punk was ultimately squashed by the giant.
Again, what was the point behind this feud? Why did they make Punk look so weak?
The feud seems to be over by now, but we'll have to wait and see. However, If you haven't watched the latest episode of Smackdown, then you probably missed another set of victims squashed by the giant. The team of Vance Archur and Curt Hawkins, a team that was supposed to be built to contend for the tag titles, lost in less than 90 seconds to Big Show.
The path of destruction continues.
Despite, all these squashes, Big Show hasn't gained anything yet. He only harmed other superstars.
Why are WWE making Big Show look so dominant and strong? Why are they booking him as an unstoppable monster? Is there a purpose behind all this?
If they're trying to make him look strong in order to involve him in a title match, weren't all these squashes enough? Wasn't beating a former three-time World Heavyweight Champion enough?
A close world title match seems impossible for the next few months, as it's obvious that Kane and Undertaker's feud will go on until after Hell in a Cell.
I think they could have made him the next contender for the Intercontinental Championship in order to push Dolph Ziggler. At least, this could have made the whole thing look a bit logical. Big Show is unstoppable and he's going after the belt.
Are WWE making Big Show look so strong so that they prepare for a huge feud that involves him with another rising star? Could this star be Alberto Del Rio?
Until now, Big Show seems to be going through a path of destruction that has no clear way. All possibilities mentioned above could be logical, but nothing seems true now.
I have no problem with Big Show, but I don't want to watch squashes just for the sake of fillers. And if WWE are having future plans for him, they can at least make him crush mid-cards who are used to jobbing, rather than harming some established superstars.
For me, Big Show is one of the greatest WWE superstars and a definite future Hall of Famer. Given his size, he has some amazing in-ring skills. Compared to other giants, he can easily stand out as the best due to his athleticism.
Furthermore, Big Show has some remarkable mic skills, and can easily cut promos with no problems at all. We've seen some of his segments with Swagger and CM Punk. Of course, we can't forget the numerous championships he achieved during his career.
I'm not trying to anticipate future possibilities, and we all know that many things are yet to come. But his current run can only be described as an obscure path of destruction with no destination.
Big Show can be good if used to push other talents. As a giant, it's easy to make any other superstar credible by beating him. And with his good mic skills, he can carry others during promos too.
I don't even mind him being a world champion again, as I miss giant, unstoppable champions. But again, a close world title shot seems difficult at the moment, unless they can wait till the Brothers of Destruction's feud is over.
I suggest they make him the next contender to Ziggler's title. This will be a good addition since Kofi Kingston lost his chance of getting back the title by now. He can even pair with Kingston and feud for the tag-team titles. Or he could feud with Alberto Del Rio in order to further establish the Mexican superstar and put him over.
Anything can be done after his recent run other than continuing with the squash-for-nothing run.
So what do you think? Why is Big Show booked this way? Are WWE officials gearing him as the next World Heavyweight, Intercontinental or Tag-Team Championships contender? Is he getting close to retirement and WWE are making this whole thing as a tribute? Is there any possible future feud for him? Was this just a punishment for the superstars who were squashed by him?
Many questions could be asked, and only time will tell us what's next.
