"MMA ALL THE WAY!!" PRIDE OR PROFIT?

James HizonaAug 12, 2008

Hello MMA fans and fighters! I am James "Balistik" Hizona and this is "MMA ALL THE WAY!!". Today's topic of discussion is about UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre.

It has been 4 days since Georges "Rush" St-Pierre successfully defended his Welterweight title, as he defeated Jon Fitch at UFC 87. Just 4 days and Georges has to face another challenge now. GSP must answer the question "Pride or Profit?" Lets start with the pride.

By accepting BJ Penn's challenge GSP will have a chance to not only beat "The Prodigy" again, but beat a new and hungry "Prodigy". Ever since his win over Sean Sherk, BJ Penn has been calling out GSP for a rematch. St-Pierre already has a win over Penn from their first match-up back in March of '06 at UFC 58. But that was BJ's first UFC fight in more than 2 years. 2 years later, BJ Penn is now a champion, but so is Georges St-Pierre. Both fighters have stepped up their game to a level that is so high, that it is a level that just the two of them share. Other than Jon Fitch, BJ is the only fighter to take Georges to the distance in a fight. But it is only BJ that bloodied up GSP's face and take him to a split decision, the only split decision in Georges UFC career. Some viewers think that BJ should have won that fight. Now Georges has a chance knock Penn out or, dare I say, make Penn tap out! I am sure that St-Pierre has a lot of pride in him and a win over a much improved BJ Penn would only solidify his pride as being the absolute best. But it is still a chance.

The Profit-

Georges St-Pierre must consider the fact that he will not profit in a rematch with Penn. According to GSP's fight contract if he fights Penn he will not be resigned at a higher pay. If he does not fight Penn he will be resigned for the higher pay. Plain and simple, fight Penn, no raise. Don't fight Penn, raise. Plus, Penn wants this to be a title fight. What if St-Pierre won? There is now way in hell that GSP can cut another 15 pounds to move to lightweight! He already is a huge 170 pounder anyway. George could easily go to 185, but a trip to the lightweight division would prove to be very difficult. Everybody likes to be paid for successes in their jobs, but GSP has everything to lose and really nothing to gain. I would love to see these guys fight again. Both of them are much better than they were two years ago. And if it did happen this year, it could steal fight of the year.

Now comes the time when I hear your thoughts, should Georges and BJ face in rematch? Should the fight be for both titles? or no titles at all? Should Georges put the fight on the shelf until he is resigned? Until then, this is Balistik signing out

Peace Out!
