Andy Reid has just announced that Michael Vick is now the starting QB for the Philadelphia Eagles. Rumors have been circling since last Sunday, following the Eagles vs Lions game, that Reid may have already made the choice to start Vick. Reid has now made it official, announcing that Vick will continue to be the starter for the Eagles.
Reid claims that this has nothing to do with Kevin Kolb's concussion, and this is a strategical move based on Vick's current play. Vick started his first game against the Detroit Lions, he posted the Eagles first win, with very impressive numbers.
So this begs the question, what happens to Kolb?
Kolb was diagnosed with a concussion following the Eagles week one match up, which opened the door for Vick to start his first game. Some how, from the time Kolb was injured to now, the Eagles upper management has made the choice to keep Kolb as a back up.
Obviously there is no way Kolb could be happy with this decision, and some could make the case that he did not really have a fair chance to prove that he is a starter. Only getting parts of pre-seasons games, and then one half of his week one start. But the fact of the matter is, not only do Eagles fans want to see some wins, but so does Reid.
It is a possibility that Reid could have left Kolb as the starter and the Eagles might have just had to accept the 2010 season as a "rebuilding" year. Although clearly, Reid does not want a rebuilding year and has his eyes on another post season run.
There are several factors that contributed to Reid's latest decision, to name a few:
- Kolb's Poor Performance
- Vick's Great Performance
- Pressure From Philadelphia's Fan Base
- The Desire Too Win
The biggest of all four, would have to be the Eagles fan base. One of the most opinionated and outspoken crowds in the entire NFL, Reid was receiving constant demands for Vick to be named the starter. Now that Reid has made the choice, not only will the Eagles' fan base be jumping for joy, but also the team.
When Vick was starting, the Eagles offense looked like a group that was out to win games.. Energetic, and moving the ball down the field aggressively. Something that seemed to be lacking when Kolb was starting. Now it is time for Vick to show that he truly deserves his new title as the Eagles starting QB, knowing that if he slips he could be back on the bench, faster than his 40 yard dash time.
So Eagles fan's, be happy. The QB that we all were begging for will be taking the snaps for good now. As for the Eagles, let's hope they show they are once again a Super Bowl team, and becoming a legitimate NFC threat once again. Who needs McNabb right?
So a toast, to Michael Vick. Congratulations.
