August 12th a Busy Day for the Detroit Tigers

August 12th, 2008 could be a day that lives in the mind of a Tiger fan forever. The days work could have a positive affect on the future or negative repercussions for a long time.

:::Sheffield placed on Waivers:::  Full Story
The day started off with the attention around Jim Leyland and Gary Sheffield after their disagreement on playing time earlier in the week. Early in the afternoon before a 7:05 ET game against the Toronto Blue Jays, news broke that Gary Sheffield was placed on waivers for anybody to trade for him.

Most always news that a player was placed on waivers is never leaked to the press, but this case it was. This could not be good for the Tigers clubhouse. Usually the players don't know that the organization want to get rid of them until they are traded, but now Gary is aware he is unwanted and he could cause a problem in the clubhouse or on the field.

:::Garcia signs with Tigers:::  Full Story
Later in the day, but still before the game, a source from MLB.com announced that the Tigers had signed free agent, Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract. There had been talks between Detroit and Garcia before the Trade Deadline, but obviously both sides weren't on the same page at that time.

Garcia will get a couple of starts in Triple-A Toledo and most likely come to the majors to start a few games before the end of the season. Freddy is a free agent again at the end of the season, but if all goes well, the Tigers could get a leg up on resigning him. Last season Garcia went only 1-5 with a 5.90 ERA for the Phillies, but those numbers don't reflect his career stats (117-76, 4.07 ERA, 1252 K).

:::D-Train promoted to Triple-A:::  Full Story
In the late innings of the Detroit-Toronto game, news reports said that the Tigers had promoted struggling pitcher, Dontrelle Willis, to Triple-A Toledo. His first start back will be on the 15th versus Richmond. Tigers officials did say that there is no time-table for D-Train's return to the Tigers.

In Single-A, Dontrelle went 0-3 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts and a relief appearance. With the Tigers this season, Dontrelle had a 0-1 record and a horrific ERA of 10.32 in 11 1/3 innings. Tigers GM, Dave Dombrowski hopes to have Willis ready by the start of the 2009 season after he suffered a knee injury earlier in the season.
