Oh What a Night for Liverpool

sportslogos.netIf anyone was unlucky enough to have missed one of Liverpool’s most brilliant European performances, then I’m sorry—but it truly was a must watch game.

Captain Fantastic Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, and Ryan Babel all found the back of the net, whilst Pepe Reina kept a clean sheet. To reach the last sixteen, Liverpool had three must win games to get through, each of which they won by four goals each.

They are the highest scoring team in the UEFA Champion’s League. Harry Kewell had the game of his career—setting up two of the goals and providing great runs. He even came close to scoring his first in the Champions league.

For the Liverpool players and fans, this game had the memento and spirit of a cup final. It justified all the faith that the fans have in Liverpool.

Marseille experienced shoddy defending, especially when Steven Gerrard was brought down in the box (although Gael Givet should have been penalized with a yellow card for that tackle).

Gerrard scored from a rebound penalty in the third minute, for his tenth goal in eleven games. Not bad for a midfielder that gets booed by the English fans (no wonder Carragher retired).

Meanwhile, Rafael Benitez proved his brilliance with his tinkering of a team that had just played their worst game away to Reading over the weekend.

It took Marseille a while to get into the game, and even then they were out of their depth. Rafael Benitez says that Liverpool are just enjoying their sensational football team, and with performances like that, why wouldn't they?

Liverpool again made history by being the first English team to defeat Marseille in France in a European game. Let's hope they maintain this excellent form, as they face Manchester United on Sunday and Chelsea shortly after.

On December 21, Liverpool will find out who they face next in the Champions league—and because they finished second in their group, they could face either AC Milan or Barcelona.

Whoever they do face—let's get ready for some more sensational football.
