The oldest active player in the major leagues is Jamie Moyer. The past two seasons has been awfully weird seeing Jamie in a Phillies' uniform. However, with the Phillies in the post season race, I wish the best for Mr. Moyer and his hopes for a World Series ring. Back in 2006 I thought Bavasi made a smart move by trading an aging Moyer to the Phillies in 2006, but then later regretted it as Moyer got better as he got older.
Jamie Moyer is one of most popular Mariners of all-time up their with the Griffeys, Ichiros, and Buhners, when you talk about favorite Mariners, Moyer's name is bound to come up. He has had great success as a crafty left-hander and was a great clubhouse guy who mentored young starting pitchers who joined the rotation during his time as a Mariner.
Moyer ended up in Seattle after a trade from the Cubs for then-current Mariner, Darren Bragg. I'd say that was a pretty good trade for the M's. Moyer would pitch in the rotation for the Mariners for a good ten years. Jamie only posted two losing seasons in 2004 and 2006.
Perhaps Moyer's best season as a Mariner came in the magical 2001 season. Moyer compiled a record of 20-6 with a carrer-low (at the time) era of 3.43. Moyer would end up finishing 4th in Cy Young voting that year. Another stand out season came two years later in 2003. Moyer compiled a record of 21-7 with a 3.23 era. Amazingly, during the 2003 season Moyer was already 40 years old.
One thing that didn't show up in the stat books was his Jesus-like deeds outside of baseball. He started the Moyer Foundation which is probably the most successful athletic-led charity in the Northwest (I'll forgive you for those corny brown bear car wash commercials).ย
Jamie Moyer always seemed to have a positive relationship with management, his coaches, his teammates, and the fans. This is why he doesn't necessarily have to have the numbers to be so high up on this list (even though he does have the numbers).
