NHL Buzz: The Latest on Marc Staal, Sheldon Souray, New Jersey Devils, and More

Multiple reports are suggesting Marc Staal and the Rangers are very close on a contract extension. Some say the deal could get done tonight.

My take: The sooner this gets done the faster both sides can move on and get ready for the season.

Oilers GM Steve Tambellini has told Sheldon Souray not to report to training camp and to stand by for further orders. In the meantime, the Oilers are still shopping Sheldon Souray as they don't want him anywhere near anyone in the organization.

My take: The funny thing about all of this is Sheldon Souray is a great guy. If you talk to any of his teammates they would tell you that. On a side note, the Oilers would have to take on at least some salary in order to move Souray.

In order for the Devils to get under the cap and have a little bit of breathing room they will need to clear $4 or $5 million in cap space. Bob McKenzie of TSN is reporting that they are shopping both Colin White and Bryce Salvador on the blueline; however, Colin White does have a no-trade clause.

My take: Bryce Salvador is a much more movable asset due to the fact he does not have a NTC. If the Devils move Salvador they will still have to clear at least $1 million.

I have received several emails today from sources telling me that Zach Parise wants to re-sign in New Jersey and to do so as soon as he possibly can.

My take: The Devils do have enough cap space to re-sign Parise long-term as Jamie Langenbrunner and Jason Arnott are both UFA's next season which will clear seven million dollars in cap space which is more than enough. Let's say Parise signs for an average of $6.5 million per season. That is only $3 million more than he earns now so cap is not an issue.

This concludes today's edition of NHL Buzz, enjoy.
