While I am quite sure that Dana White is very proud of UFC 87 and last night's results, both fight-wise and profit-wise, I hope he is not proud of the WWE atmosphere he has invoked by his acquisition and promotion of Brock Lesnar.
Does Brock's "in your face" poor sportsmanship get you off, Dana? Are you using him to act out your own juvenile fantasies or are you "adult" enough to admit to being embarrassed by his post fight shenanigans?
Have you failed to notice how much viewers admire the good sportsmanship the fighters who have not been in the WWE display after their fights by showing concern for and respect of their opponents?
Are you pandering to the 18-34-year-old young men with a taste for WWE drama and its episodes of extreme bad taste, poor sportsmanship, and gloating behavior?
Honestly, I would verbally tear my grandson's head off if he acted like Brock Lesnar did after winning a wrestling match. And he is only a sophomore in high school, not a college grad several years removed from collegiate level competition.
If MMA is ever going to be considered as a civilized sport, it should separate itself from parodying the WWE productions by displaying much more appropriate displays of emotion. MMA should not embrace a "roping and reeling them in" routine along with a crotch grab to demoralize an opponent who has been humiliated enough by simply losing.
How ridiculous is it for a 280 lbs+ man to resort to the Iron Ring rappers' behavior which is in evidence on BET? Will you make Brock into a rapper wearing pimp clothing and gold chains next?
I was seriously disturbed at Lesner's attitude even though I am sure he felt he had to win to justify the huge investment you made in acquiring him to make the heavyweight division deeper. After all, he was fighting a man with much more MMA experience who has been a star in Pride as well as fighting more recently for the UFC.
It is good to see that Brock has acquired more ground skills and is finally showing his wrestling prowess, but is it too much to expect him to show a little class as well?
A few months ago there was a rumor floating around that Vince McMahon would help you buy out the Ferttita brothers and take over the UFC. Is making the UFC into another WWE venue what you two had in mind, and is this just the first step in accomplishing that end?
As much as I have loved the UFC I will jump ship before I will watch you corrupt the sport and turn it into a faux professional wrestling spectacle.
After all, you are young enough to be my son and I think you need some advice from your elders before you corrupt a growing sport and send it in the wrong direction.
It is easier to keep something from breaking than to fix it once it's broken.

I'm not an idiot Dorothy so don't play me like one please. Instead of playing the free speech card you may want to explain why what you write makes sense. Lesnar is the one in control of his actions and it's not necessarily Dana's fault that he signed one of the most talented fighters in the world (as he should want to do) and that the guy also happens to know how to be an asshole.

I don't understand how Dana was supposed to know that Lesnar would act like he did. I also don't understand why Dana has the responsibility to make all his fighters act the 'way they should' by talking to them before a fight... how do you even know if a guy like Lesnar would listen to him.

Actually, Heath Herring is the one who walked over and congratulated his corner. Heath knows how to show class, even in defeat. It just shows how much Lesnar needs to learn about being a sportsman and not a showcase freak. Show boating is tolerable but when it is to mock the other side, I think that it shows a person's true colors.

WWE wrestlers have no class? Yeah... they go to places like Iraq to put on a show while there's a war going on, are heavily involved in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and are respected for their other charity work outside of the WWE. You don't know anything about the WWE, its wrestlers (and the men and women they are outside of the ring), and it's obvious that your pathetic article and feelings are a result of a lack of logic that ignorant old bitches like you are bound to have.

Do you know how funny that statement is? I became involved with WWF wrestlers when Hulk Hogan flew my girlfriend all over the states, and she kept company with the British Bulldogs, Jake the Snake, Sting, Sean Michaels, Randy "Macho Man" Savage and Miss Elizabeth (they shared clothes because they were both the same size), Bret and Owen Hart, Rick Flair among others. And I have pictures of her with the Undertaker whom she accompanied to the ring as "the Weeping Widow" in several shows. She got us free tickets to shows in Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Decatur, Springfield, and Champaign before my family and I lost interest because the fighters did drugs and WWF or E is not real. I bet I know more about which fighters do which drugs and their sexual proclivities than you ever will, wonder boy. I may be a bitch, I am not a stupid bitch, sir--or should I call you kid?

You think Brock's actions are any worse than Dana's actions? Dana is a face to the UFC it is just too bad his comments he makes do not always display the UFC in a very good light. And to say that wrestlers in the WWE "which I am not really a fan of but can respect what they do outside of wrestling" are classless is way off base. I have watched first hand what some of the men and women do for sick kids, war heroes serving over sea, and troubled youth. I think most sports in general could take a lesson from the WWE in regard.

Horrible article...regardless of what Lesnar did before his UFC tenure in the WWE he also won an NCAA National title, 4 NCAA All American titles and went 106-5 in his collegiate career. With the exception of Josh Koscheck, he's got the *best* amateur wrestling background in the UFC. Not to mention the fact that he's far from the first pro wrestler--past present or future--to fight in the UFC. Off the top of my head--there's Ken Shamrock, who fought as "Mr. Wrestling Vince Torelli" in a number of regional promotions before turning to MMA, hall of famer Mark "The Hammer" Coleman who still wrestles on Inoki's cards in Japan to this day, Dan Sevren who is a a former UFC champion. Not to mention the fact that a guy I consider the #2 heavyweight in world behind Fedor--Josh Barnett--is an accomplished pro wrestler who also *still* competes in Japanese pro wrestling.
Also not to mention the fact that modern MMA--certainly in Japan--would not exist were it not for pro wrestling. The Japanese MMA and "shoot wrestling" promotions grew out of their pro wrestling promotions. In Japan, it wouldn't surprise me if over 50% of the competitors in MMA have also worked in pro wrestling at some point. Also, there likely wouldn't *be* a UFC were it not for the pro wrestling fanbase as their support of the sport kept it alive through the pre-Fertitta purchase/pre NJAC unified rules lean years. In the beginning it was only bloodthirsty meth addicts and pro wrestling fans who cared about the sport....
And lets look what else Lesnar brings to the table from his WWE tenure: International fame, poise in front of crowds and the ability to promote and "sell" a fight. Yep, can't see why Dana wants those qualities in a fighter. Not to mention the fact that the UFC has fewer top heavyweights right now than Brock's wife Sable has a-cup bras in her lingerie drawer.
This may be the first time I've disagreed with a critique of Dana White in a couple of years, but this is way, way, way off base. Check the buyrates for Brock's 1st UFC appearance which were through the roof and doubtfully caused by the Tim Sylvia/Big Nog main event.
Do some research on the history of pro wrestling as it relates to MMA before you write such an ill informed article.

My commitment to what you refer to as professional wrestling ended when I learned that every "wrestler" was required to have a S>A>G> card before they could wrestle. Pro Wrestling as in WWF/WWE is a performance and scripted. I know the physical reauirements because my best friend Jan tried to get my son in a professional wrestling school, so you are talking to the wrong person if you are trying to teach me the realities of pro wrestling. Hulk Hogan/Terry Bolea sent my 12 year old son a keg full os vitamins and various wrestling memorabilia when he was seeing my girlfriend and flying her to his performances 28 years ago (before he married). If you want to read my WWE trash go to my archives and read "WWE: Oh No! What Happened to Vince McMahon"

Dana White will do whatever he can for money. There is a reason Frank Shamrock is constantly calling him out and bashing the UFC. Dana White for all the good he has done, he has come to a point where hes on a very thin line. One is make this sport great for the reason it is now great, the other is play to the fans for every small thing to make more money but lose the true fans, and true athletes...

Freedom of speech is right! Lesnar celebrated the way apparently he felt he could, do I agree with it? Hell no! You should be honored to fight in such an organization like the UFC, but that is just the way some people are. Look at Rashad Evans, he acted like that on The Ultimate Fighter and got ripped by Matt Hughes for it. Hopefully someone will let Lesnar know that it really isn't the appropriate way to act, and that he needs to be more respectful of the sport. He is a gifted wrestler, and I would love to see him shake things up in the Heavyweight division, but if he continues to disrespect other fights and the sport of MMA, then I will cheer for him to get his ass kicked every time he fights.

What about after every Tito fight when he beat a guy and did his grave-digging bit? Or when Kendall Grove did it for Tito? Or what about Nate Diaz flipping off the Camera while having his guy in a triangle choke? Now Nate is the Main Event on the next Fight Night, that must be a huge punishment.
Dorothy, sorry you didnt like it. But, I dont mind that type of reaction. Brock has spent the last 5 or 6 months being called a joke and fake. So he was letting off steam, he shook Herring's hand in the end. People need to stop worrying sooo much about being "PC". Tito was the biggest heel in UFC for years and I know that you and everyone else knows he has the 2 largest PPV's totals in UFC history. So maybe they do need a few guys ppl hate. Kommissar White has already turned the UFC into a circus. Consider that this clown felt that grown men urinating all over themselves and busting up other folk's property would make good tv and is the image of a cage fighter the public needs to see. Expecting anything else from this guy would be way too much.
From Bruce Buffoon his cartoonish ring announcer to his ringside announcers who are a joke to anyone who knows the fight game, White's attempts to create an unbridled monopoly are crumbling at his feet. His constant self promotion, the awful way he treats his fighters, even legends like Randy Couture, his constant self promotion have all reach the bullshit tolerance level of most savy MMA fans. Fighters will continue to bolt for an organization like Affliction where they are given the respect and money they deserve.
The ONLY folks who support White are ignorant mouth breathing mall rats without a clue. The UFC IS the WWE.

Now, I hate Dana white as much as the next guy... In fact, other than him elevating MMA to the level of respect it is earnign in the sports world, I hate everything he has done... BUT whats wrong with Buffer or Joe Rogan. Just FYI Rogan is a pretty good fighter, and knows what he is talkign about. But yes, I dont like how he treats the fighters, and the Couture thing is a perfect example. The guy wanted to retire and Dana basically says no, you cant. After everyhting Randy has done for the UFC Dana treats him like a total piece of shit. If the fighters werent so good I would never watch another UFC event. In fact, after the Bisping Hammil fight, I didnt watch a UFC event for a couple months.
I jsut disagree that his announcers have anything to do with it, in fact, i feel they are quite good.
Oh and has anyone else noticed that even big John Mcarthy left UFC for other fight leagues...

While I think this was well written, I have to disagree with the sentiment. Actually, I don't disagree with you that bad sportsmanship in general is bad for sports. But in no way is MMA similar to baseball, basketball, or football. It's much closer to boxing, and if you've followed the history of boxing, the bigger the draw, the bigger the fight. Brock Lesnar understands this very well. And yes, he did learn it from WWE.
Look at someone like Muhammad Ali. He had the skills to sit back and let those do the talking. But he understood that boxing was a superstar driven sport. For all of its "sweet science" attribution, it's really a star driven business. It's not even about the best fights. It's about the fights between the biggest stars. Last year, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. broke the box office and their fight was the biggest money fight in the history of boxing. Were they the two "best boxers"? No, but they were the two biggest stars. And Mayweather did as much more trash talking than Lesnar will ever do. It's called getting one's persona over.
So while Lesnar might've been disrespectful, he wasn't doing it for any other reason than to get a fan reaction. Because maybe the next time he fights, those folks who were upset at his antics, will pay to see him fight with the hopes that he'll get beat.
MMA is about making people pay to watch shows through promotion. It's not about being good sports.
Josh Barnett and Andrei Arlovski might be a good hardcore MMA fan fight. But it will do peanuts compared to whoever Lesnar fights next. Promotion is the name of the game.

As far as MMA being recognized as a civilized sport, it never will be because it isn't. That doesn't mean it isn't great. It is what it is, and we should all just accept it.
Professional fighting has always been and will always be about the ability to generate revenue. That is why flashy pro wrestling style antics continue to penetrate MMA and pro boxing. It has always been this way and it will remain so for the rest of time.
If you want purely sporting combat athletics, I suggest you watch amateur wrestling, boxing, judo, etc.

So you approve of what Randy did to Tito but not what Lesnar did to Herring? Can you explain to me why one is justifiable but not the other?
Garrets point is one thing that seems to have gone over your head and you have completely dismissed in a flippant manner as it is different to your viewpoint. Regardless of what you think MMA is built on big names who people will pay to see fight, not who is the most respectful or who has the most technical ability. Lyoto Machida is unbelievably skilled but put him in a headline match and watch the buyrate plummet, yet put Kimbo Slice in there and there is interest, regardless of his actual MMA ability.
So you and many others dissaprove of what Brock did? Thats great! Now many more people will pay to see his next fight in the hope of seeing him getting his asked kicked. People will pay to see their favourites fight in the hope they win, they will also pay to see a big name that they hate in the hope of them losing. Brock raised his profile both with his dominant win AND his post match actions.
And to address the actual point of your article. What the hell has Dana White got to do with anything that happened? Because it happened in his organisation? Then perhaps the downfall of MMA started with the owners of K-1 being responsible for Heath Herring himself knocking out his opponent Yoshihiro Nakao in the PRE MATCH STAREDOWN because he disrespected him, or in Pride for the owners allowing Mark Coleman to go nuts after shoguns freak injury, or the Diaz/Noons incident, or people being stepped on after a match, or Phil Baroni being headbutted by his opponents brother post fight in England.
A bit of showboating by Brock Lesnar isnt a big deal in the scheme of things, much like Randys wasnt after the Tito fight. Theres even a strong argument thats it healthy for the long term future of the sport and to blame Dana White for any of the things you dissaprove of is at best ill thought out. At worst, idiotic.

That being said, the level of corruption in boxing is very low now compared to what it was in the 20s - 60s.
Hmmm... That was when boxing was at it's most popular......
You don't supposed that is because the promoters of the time manipulated fights and fighters to stardom and controlled who got title shots to generate the most revenue do you??
Not saying fights should ever be fixed, but without a little manipulation (like BJ Penn supposed bad blood with Pulver and Sherk (the man would make a great pro wrestler)) of the surroundings of the match, a little extra hype here and there, the fighters make far less money in the long run.
