Can the real Brett Favre please GO AWAY!
I don't get America.Ā The biggestĀ sporting event in the world started this week and no, it was not the New York Jets PRE-SEASON game against the Cleveland Browns.Ā I have never seen so much hype in all of my years watching sports.Ā One player has caused a bigger media circus than the Clinton impeachment.Ā
WhenĀ I turned Sports Center on today, the Olympics was the first story.Ā I said to my brother, a devoutĀ Jets fan, "Finally I can watch some sports without hearing the name Brett Favre for 10 straight minutes. I can't stand the same conversation between Mark Schlereth and Mike Golic about who got the better of the trade and will the Jets make the playoffs every night." But sure enough right on cue, Brett Favre's face comes up as ESPN reports live from the Jets CLOSED PRACTICE.Ā

Later in the day, my brother Andrew and I went to a Long Island Lizards lacrosse game.Ā The Lizards play their home games at a small stadium near Hofstra University, home of the Jets training camp.Ā I hoped to escape the media circus i have seen on TV for the pastĀ month at this game.Ā Unfortunately, the madness did not stop.Ā People lined the streets outside of Hofstra to try and catch a glimpse of the 38 year-old QB.Ā Just to remind you, they had a CLOSED PRACTICE TODAY.Ā Leave it to Jets fans to try and get into a closed practice.Ā Anyway, as we got to the Lizards game, I looked out my window and saw six seperateĀ people wearingĀ number 4 Jet jerseys.Ā This game was on August 9th and he was traded on August 7th.Ā Why are people so amazed by a QB older than their coach.Ā Even as we sat in out seats, the spectators behind us spoke of Favre's amazing talents for 3 straight quarters.Ā I was ready to punch someone.Ā
The worst part of the Brett Favre saga is its timing.Ā I may not have cared as much if this happened a week ago, but this entire sequence of events has happened in the middle of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.Ā It is upsetting to me that more Americans care about a single man than the 596 competing for this great country.Ā If I am this upset about the Brett Favre coverage, I can only imagine how NBC feels, losing all of their potential Olympic viewers to ESPN's coverage of Brett Favre's first days as a Jet.
