College Station-  Defense was the key for the Aggies in front of an opening day crowd of 81,287 at Kyle Field.  New defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter brought his new 3-4 defense into the game ready as A&M ran away with the game led by their stifling defense and a strong rushing attack They pulled away in the second half for a  48-7 Victory over Stephen F. Austin.

The offense started slow for the Aggies but a late first quarter drive led by a strong rushing attack yielded the games first score as Christine Michael took it up the gut for a 15 yard score, with Bullock's PAT the Aggies took the early 7-0 lead.  Driving down the field late in the second half the Aggies Drive stalled deep in lumberjack territory and they had to settle for a Randy Bullock 32 yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead.  The very next play from scrimmage corner back Dustin Harris picked off Jeremy Moses and took it all the way back for a 38 yard return, with Bullock's PAT good putting the Aggies in a strong 17-0 lead. On their next series the lumberjacks put a 10 play 56 yard drive together converting on a 4th and 8 from the A&M 37 yard line which set up a 21 yard touchdown strike from Jeremy Moses to wide out Cordell Roberson.  Logan Barret's PAT brought Steven F. Austin within 10 with just over 4 minutes to play in the first half.  A&M followed that up with a 10 play 52 yard drive of their own capped off by a Randy Bullock 27 yard field goal to put the Aggies up 20-7 going into half time.

With the game still within reach, the second half was all A&M. Lead by quarter back Jerrod Johnson and a continued rushing effort A&M pulled away from Stephen F. Austin as they put up 21 points in the the third quarter and 7 in the fourth and the defense held strong as they shutout the Lumberjacks not allowing a score for the entire second half.  Johnson started things off in the third finishing off a 15 play 69 yard drive with his 1 yard touchdown run. Johnson came back on the next series following up his touchdown run with a 7 yard touchdown pass to Jeff Fuller putting them up 34-7.  After the defense forced yet another punt the offense came back out and scored for their third straight series on a quick 3 play 50 yard drive capped off by a Christine Michael 4 yard jaunt putting the Aggies up 41-7 to end the third quarter.  With the game in doubt the Aggies put the icing on the cake in the 4th quarter as Johnson threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Jeff Fuller on short 4 yarder with a little over 11 minutes remaining which gave them a big 48-7 lead. All defense the rest of the way. With the new 3-4 defense paying huge dividends for the Aggies as they ran away with their season opener finishing Stephen F. Austin off with a 48-7 Victory.

Next up for A&M is 1-0 Louisiana Tech who won their first game in lethargic style 20-6 over Grambling.  The game will be played at Kyle Field Saturday, September 11th at 7:00PM.
