PocoNO!!!: Why This Track Pains Me and Three Drivers To Watch On Sunday
Outisde of the longest straightaway on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series what is there that appeals to anyone about NASCAR's stop at Pocono this weekend?Ā After an extremely boring race at Indianapolis which was filled with cautions and underachieving tires this is the last track the Cup circuit needed to show up on its schedule.
To me this is the most boring stop on the schedule and fortunate for us racing fans we get to see 1000 miles of racing in the Pocono Mountains in two months.Ā This track does very little for me and here are a couple of ways that would make the trip to Pocono be a little less painful.
The first thing I would do with the race at Pocono is take 100 miles off of the race.Ā There is no reason that this track should house a 500 race that seems to run closer to 600 miles.Ā With the way this track runs it takes forever and seemingly a day to complete.Ā There isn't a whole lot of room to pass at the Pocono raceway which makes for rather boring racing.Ā This in turn makes each race seem that much longer than it really is because of how unthrilling it usually is.
The next thing I would do in order to make Pocono a little more exciting of track to see on the schedule is to only see it once a year.Ā Within two months we get blessed by the Cup Series to see Pocono on the schedule.Ā With the track being the only triangle in the series it does bring some uniqueness, don't get me wrong.
The problem with Pocono is that it is an extremely boring track that doesn't have a whole lot to offer whatsoever.Ā One long straightaway with a massive left turn that is extremely sharp for the speed we see the drivers enter into it with.Ā Other than that it is really nothing special besides the way it is shaped.
With my complaining about the show here are a few names to watch out for on Sunday, count on these drivers to walk away with top ten's, maybe even a victory as long as they steer clear of trouble Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania.
Kurt "Not Kyle" Busch - A season that has been a disappointment, yes.Ā A track he has shown much success at in the past, yes as well.Ā Don't expect to see Kurt make a miracle run towards the chase this year because its not going to happen.Ā However, expect to see him in contention at the end on Sunday.
Brian Vickers - This is the site where things began to head for the best this season for Brian Vickers and the Red Bull Toyota team.Ā A second place finish was unexpected by many but for weeks prior and for weeks afterwards we saw why this is a team on the charge and one that may factor in the chase before its all said and done.Ā Expect another top 10 by the Vick.
Jimmie Johnson - I know, I know, I'm going out on a real limb here.Ā The fact of the matter is that Jimmie Johnson is in the midst of a tear.Ā Second place at Chicagoland, a win in a horribly boring race at the Brickyard, and a track where he knows how to drive very well.Ā This one has all the recipe to be where its made official that Jimmie Johnson has turned things entirely in the right direction and a track where we see him make a serious run at victory lane.
