Matt Hamill vs. Tito Ortiz: Are You Kidding Me?

Dale De SouzaJul 22, 2010

And it just so happens that only about four to five minutes after I crank one out about Brendan Schaub Vs. Gabriel Gonzaga being slated for UFC 121, another promising fight just had to be added to the card.

Don't worry Joe Silva, I'm not mad at you by any means. I like the fights you've come up with.

Added to what promises to be a blockbuster card in Anaheim is a classic case of student vs. teacher.

Matt "The Hammer" Hamill, fresh off of the win that sent Keith Jardine out of the UFC after the Ultimater Fighter 11 finale, will now have to deal with a tough SOB in the man that coached him on the Ultimate Fighter's third season—The Huntington Beach Bad Boy himself, Tito Ortiz.

Are you kidding me right now?

What you have here is a fight that nobody thought would ever be seen by anybody in the world of Mixed Martial Arts.

Other than Hamill's skill in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you've got a pretty even fight on paper.

There are really only two questions I have about this fight—one for Ortiz and one for Hamill.

My question for Tito is the question of whether or not his neck and his back are going to be at a level where Tito Ortiz can still bring it to Hamill in "vintage Ortiz" fashion.

One of the three legendary names in the sport affiliated with the rise and the success of the UFC, Ortiz had to take a leave from action to recover from a back injury.

His last fight, a split decision loss in a rematch with Forrest Griffin at UFC 106, drew a slight bit of criticism from some fans, but Ortiz did perform better than what some had expected.

My question for Hamill also concerns a health issue, although one that may not be as severe as the back injury Ortiz has had.

Hamill I have a question about because he was found to have a staph infection sometime after the fight with Jardine.

Now, I'm not all that certain as to how much a staph infection can affect one's performance in activities because I've never had one, but I know Minotauro Nogueira did have one himself and he fought Mir with it, so maybe Hamill's wasn't as serious.

Either way, I hope both the legend and the young gun are at 100 percent when they clash in Anaheim.

I really don't want there to be any excuses for either man when one of these outstanding fighters has to take that unfortunate trip to the loss column.
