Top 10 Fantasy QB Commentary

Lee JohnsonJul 27, 2008

Quarterback used to be a position you could wait a while on before pulling the trigger.  You can still wait until later rounds but there is a good chance you are going to be leaving a lot of points on the board and not maximizing your roster and draft picks.

As we go into camp, here are some notes on the Top 10 fantasy football QB’s for 2008 Re-Draft leagues.  You can check out the rest of the rankings HERE.

Tom Brady

There is absolutely no reason to think that there will be a big drop off in Tom Brady’s production in 2008.  Nobody expects him to match last year (for one because it’s easier to predict a record won’t be broken than it is to predict one will be), but even a drop of 10 TD’s will be 40…not too fantasy shabby!  Donte Stallworth’s departure to ride the stationary bike in Cleveland is not a big hit as they could lineup a cardboard cutout at the #2 position and Randy Moss and Wes Welker will still get theirs.

Peyton Manning

The king has fallen a spot.  After many years in the top position he gives up his crown to his nemesis in New England.  It’s not because of a lack of game for Manning, he has thrown 31 TD’s the last two years although his yardage dropped.  Even without Marvin Harrison last year the Colts didn’t seem to miss a beat.  Good news is the attention is off Manning in the first round so owners can snag a RB before Manning in the second if they wish.

Tony Romo

There is not much of a reason at all to think that Tony Romo will have a drop in production.  The only key player to depart on offense is Julius Jones, who the Cowboys think they will improve over with Marion Barber anyway and Felix Jones is in the house to be the new number two. The guys around Romo are paying at a high level and he will continue to do so as well.  On a side note, I personally love seeing Jessica Simpson in the stands…where I can see her and not hear her.

Drew Brees

I was this [...] close to moving Drew Brees up to number three this week after the trade for Jeremy Shockey.  Finally a proven guy at a position they were hoping to get a lot of help from last season.  Options just got much better for Brees, regardless of who lines up at #2…or#3 WR.  If they can figure out the rest of the WR questions behind Marques Colston, Drew goes up a spot.

Carson Palmer

Despite all the distractions and injuries for the Bengals, Carson Palmer continues to play at a high level.  They are planning on using a RBBC approach…as long as they get some consistency running the ball.  Once Chad Johnson gets past his ankle things will be looking up…since he got past the holdout business.

Ben Roethlisberger

The Steelers, always known for their running game, quietly had one of the better fantasy passers last season.  Big Ben and the Steeler fans got their wish for a big wideout in Limas Sweed in the 2008 NFL Draft.  Santonio Holmes continues to improve and Hines Ward will still deliver when needed.  Adding another set of hands in the backfield with Rashard Mendenhall in the draft, Big Ben has targets all over the field again in 2008.

Matt Hasselbeck

One thing that we have learned over the years is that Matt Hasselbeck doesn’t need a WR to carry him for him to put up fantasy numbers.  He has been for real.  With that, the questions surrounding who will be catching passes from him in 2008 should not effect his fantasy stock.  They come and go but Hasselbeck still gets his fantasy numbers.

Donovan McNabb

There is going to be some value to be had this year with Donovan McNabb.  Be it his injury history or the fact he doesn’t have a big name WR he is throwing to, he is dropping on draft day and going cheap in auctions.  There is a feeling in the air that McNabb is going to try and prove himself this year…whether or not he can still do that is up in the air.  All we need to know is that McNabb is still capable of being a fantasy starter.  He may also be the last guy on the list here that you will feel comfortable starting at QB on any given Sunday.  Rumor has it Anquan Boldin may come in a trade…wouldn’t that be swell?

Jay Cutler

When the news broke about Jay Cutler’s dance with diabetes, the first reaction in fantasy circles was questioning how this will effect 2008.  Myself, my first response was that he will improve in 2008.  Now that they know why he was getting so tired and dropping weight last season, they can get a grip on it and he is going to feel better out there on Sunday.  When Cutler feels better, his owners feel better…

David Garrard

David Garrard is going to be a fantasy option this year.  A little over a year ago people would have laughed had you said that as he was sitting behind Byron Leftwich.  Fast forward and he turned out to have a pretty efficient season in 07′ and this offseason they added Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson.  “But they suck…” you say.  They are still quite an upgrade over what the Jags had.  Garrard may not keep the INT’s as low as last year but we should see the TD’s go up.
