Which Green Bay Packers TE Will Get Cut?
Since the Packers have drafted Andrew Quarless, TE out of Penn State. Many people have come to the conclusion that Donald Lee is on his way out because the Packers will have 4 TE on their roster. I am curious to why people think this? In my opinion Havner is the odd man out. When comparing I really don't see it as close decision.
I would assume the argument for Havner is that he showed more reliable hands especially in the red zone and really appeared to have a lot of potential. I would agree his hands are more reliable but that is about the only thing he is better than Lee in and I wouldn't say it is a large margin. Another argument i guess is that he is younger but he is only younger by 2 years he is 27 and Lee is 29.
Lee is the better blocking tight end and is really the Packers only consistently solid blocking tight end and while Havner is more dangerous near the goal-line Lee has shown the ability to be effective all over the field.
Lastly and I think most importantly I think Lee is the veteran presence the Packers TE group needs. He has only been a class act since coming to the Packers. Havner on the other hand crash his motorcycle and was given a DUI. First off why was he drinking and driving and secondly why is he on a motorcycle? Finely is still only 23 and Quarless has had problems with alcohol in his past I don't get how anyone could think it is a good idea to have them learn how to be a pro from an elder player who not only received a DUI in the off season but hurt himself and his team doing it.
Finley and Quarless are two very talented players especially in the passing game, having them learn from a player like Lee would really help to learn how to take this job seriously and give them time to develop their blocking skills so the two could become better well rounded players.
