Mets-Braves: Mike Pelfrey and Rain Help New York Sweep Atlanta
Things are going really well for the Mets right now—so well that they just swept the Braves after beating them 1-0 in the final game, thanks to some rain and another strong performance by the emerging Mike Pelfrey.
Notes
- Angel Pagan went 0-for-3.
- Luis Castillo went 2-for-3.
- Jose Reyes went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
- Jason Bay went 1-for-2 with a walk.
- David Wright went 0-for-2.
- Ike Davis went 0-for-2.
- Jeff Francoeur went 1-for-2.
- Henry Blanco went 0-for-1 with a walk.
- Pelfrey’s line: 5IP, 5H, 0ER, 5BB, 3K.
- Raul Valdes threw one pitch before rain ended the game.
Thoughts
- Once again the Mets took advantage of some sloppy play from the Braves, as their only run scored on a Chipper Jones error. The day before the Mets scored a run when the Braves forgot the infield fly rule.
- Another strong performance from Pelfrey, who had an amazing April. It’s unlikely that he can keep up this level of performance all season, but if he becomes a legit No. 2, this team would be a legit wild-card contender.
- The Mets are now two games over .500. Don’t get too excited, but if they can keep from falling below that number, good things might be in store for the second half of this season.
Quotes
“I got a handful of mud and the ball at the same time,” Jones said. “Troy [Glaus] said it rotated about two times coming across the infield. My hand was completely mud. That field took a lot of water even before the hard stuff came.”
Line of the Night
SB – L Castillo 2 (3), J Reyes (4). It’s great to see the Mets being very aggressive on the bases during a game in which rain was threatening the game. Reyes’ first inning steal lead to the only run of the game, and thanks to the rain, that was the difference.
Up Next
- Unfortunately the Mets are probably going to make up for this weekend against the Dodgers. They’ll probably win on Tuesday with Johan Santana on the mound, but Oliver Perez and John Maine have been inconsistent so far.
- Monday, April 26: RHP Hiroki Kuroda (2-0, 2.18) vs. LHP Oliver Perez (0-2, 3.71).
- Tuesday, April 27: RHP Charlie Haeger (0-2, 6.46) vs. LHP Johan Santana (2-1, 2.59).
- Wednesday, April 28: TBA vs. RHP John Maine (0-1, 8.64).
