PFA Premier League Team Of the Year: Who Would You Put In?
The PFA’s annual end-of-season awards took place on Sunday (25 April), with Wayne Rooney picking up Player of the Year and James Milner taking the gong for Young Player of the Year.
During the event, the PFA Premier League Team of the Year was also announced, with the nominations as follows:
Joe Hart (Man City, Birmingham on loan), Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea), Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal), Richard Dunne (Aston Villa), Patrice Evra (Man Utd), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), James Milner (Aston Villa), Darren Fletcher (Man Utd), Antonio Valencia (Man Utd), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), Didier Drogba (Chelsea).
Whilst it would be difficult to argue with many of those, there are a few notable absentees.
For instance, should Jose Reina’s fine performance on a poor Liverpool team have been enough to see him nudge ahead of Hart? Were the heroics of Gareth Bale and Florent Malouda in the second half of the season enough to see them take a place in your team of the year? And could Bakary Sagna’s performances justify a place ahead of Ivanovic?
Other players worthy of consideration must surely be Craig Bellamy, Carlos Tevez, and Darren Bent, all of whom have performed considerably above expectations on their respective sides this term.
But perhaps the most glaring omission of all is Frank Lampard, who has played in a different style and formation but still sits second on Chelsea’s top scorers list with 25 goals.
What would be your Premier League team of the season? To get the debate flowing, here’s Half Volley’s nominations:
