Does Boom-Boom Got It Takes to Be a World Champion?

Rey “Boom boom” Bautista came out victorious on his last fight against an unheralded Thai opponent Saichon Sotornpitak in Dubai. It was his first outing after being sideline for nine months because of a broken hand and it was quite an impressive victory giving Saichon his first taste of defeat and lasted only 6 rounds out of the scheduled 10 round fight.
Growing up in poverty Rey has been accustomed to hardships and criticism. Many doubted him after getting easily disposed by Daniel Ponce De Leon on his first title shot then lost a unanimous decision against journey man Heriberto Ruiz. But Rey tried to put all those things aside and concentrate on things ahead of him. He is still 23 years old and has a lot of leeway for growth, in short his career is far from over. The big question will be does Boom-boom got what it takes to be a world champion someday?
Bautista already have a marked target and that is his chin, the chin that failed him when he was knocked three times on the first round against De Leon, the chin that almost got him down against Ruiz and eventually lost a unanimous decision. If he develops a strong chin and good defense then that won’t be a problem but Rey has a tendency to get too aggressive even if it wasn’t called for. When he gets hit he tries to retaliate and his defense becomes wide open. He also has an attitude problem when he gets too cocky inside and outside the ring refusing to accept defeat and blame his loss to other things except himself. If he wants change then change should start by himself.
His last fight was impressive but it has been that way against mediocre opponents. His only legit fight was De Leon but after that there was never any significant opponent Bautista has faced. It could have been with the feather fisted Steven Luevano who is a durable and technical fighter. Yes, he was impressive on his last fight but there were some instance that he also received some hard rights that almost rock him. You would wonder how he can handle a fight against Juan Manuel Lopez, Celestino Caballero, Rogers Mtagwa, Israel Vasquez and Rafael Marquez.
Going back to my question does Boom-boom got what it takes to be a champion? When he was a kid he fell down while playing and had a barbecue stick stuck on his head. He was bleeding but was able to reach home after three hours. That’s how tough Rey is built. I don’t see him winning any fights against those top caliber opponents but we can never say never to Boom-boom even if you put a barbecue stick on his head.
