2010 NFL Draft: Baltimore Ravens are Biggest Winners on Day Two

Old AccountApr 24, 2010

When it comes to the NFL Draft, the Ravens are the most surprising team in the league.

I can say, with my memory of following this team, that out of all the mock drafts I have seen, nobody can ever put their hand on the Ravens' pick.

Baltimore did make headlines Thursday night, when trading the No. 25 overall pick to the Denver Broncos for three additional draft picks.

Immediate reaction? Well, I was on the scene at twitter, watching many writers praising the Ravens for what is a steal for a developmental quarterback.

But that only tells half the story. The Ravens fans were indeed disappointed, and the average NFL fan was probably scratching their head.

Prospects such as Dan Williams and Kyle Wilson, who the Ravens were big fans of.

But Ozzie Newsome and company said for months they loved the draft, and didn't hesitate wasting time earning more picks.

So on Friday night, with the pick they received from Denver, the Baltimore Ravens selected Sergio Kindle, linebacker from Texas.

Raven great Ray Lewis was here to announce both picks, but this is a steal for the Ravens.

Months ago he was projected as a mid- to late-first round pick. But concerns of his injury scared off many teams.

There must be something we don't know, however. It wouldn't see right if the Ravens were highly concerned and took a huge gamble this high in the second round.

The positives? There are plenty. Kindle will at some point fit into the daily lineup as a pass rusher and outside line backer. He comforts Terrell Suggs within the pass rush.

This pick can turn out really wellĀ for the Ravens. If treated properly, he can be a future Pro-Bowler in the making.

Then, the draft got better for the Ravens, and sent a message to the entire league, with the selection of Terrence "Mount" Cody, nose tackle from Alabama.

Cody should have been a first round selection, but weight issues made it a concern for most teams.

However, picture this: Cody and Haloti Ngata on the same field. Both of these men combine for 700+ pounds.

Ray Lewis was a happy man after tonight's draft, and so was the Ravens defense.

Baltimore has been one of the best defenses against run for the years, but the addition of Cody sent a message to opposing offenses: you will have to beat us through the air.

I actually believe this is one of the bigger steals of the draft. Ray Lewis will be a motivator for Cody, and at some point this season he should take on the starting role alongside Ngata.

In the third round, the Ravens went on the offensive side of the ball, taking Ed Dickson, tight end, from Oregon.

There are positives and negatives. Dickson is one heck of an athlete, and according to Mel Kiper, "has better hands then Jermaine Gresham."

The negative is he is not much of a blocking tight end. But Dickson was selected to be the tight end of the future, with Todd Heap getting up in age.

After day two, the Ravens are the biggest winners on Friday.

Baltimore is known for taking the guys who are hurt by media speculation, and turn them into something great.

The Ravens continue to use the draft as the cornerstone for success.

Even when Ozzie Newsome was doubted as a general manager, he continues to show he is one of the best in the business.

Expect more of the same from the final day of the draft, as more pieces are put in place for the big run this season.
