Chicago Cubs Send Carlos Zambrano to the Bullpen
I am in the midst of packing for my trip to Las Vegas, so I will keep this post short and sweet. What on earth are the Chicago Cubs doing?
The Cubs made headlines yesterday afternoon when they announced that they were putting RHP and Opening Day starter Carlos Zambrano in the bullpen.
I know the Cubs’ bullpen is struggling right now, but really?
“You look at these box scores every day around baseball and these games, especially in the National League, they’re won in the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth innings,” said Lou Piniella, in his fourth season as the Cubs’ manager. “There are few blowouts early. There’s some obviously but not [a lot]."
“Look, this makes all the sense in the world.”
No it doesn’t Lou. I am sorry, but I just don’t see how taking out your most talented starter out of the rotation makes sense.
With Ted Lilly coming back on Saturday, the Cubs’ rotation will look like this.
Ryan Dempster
Ted Lilly
Carlos Silva
Tom Gorzelanny
Randy Wells
I don’t know much in this world, but I do know I would rather have Zambrano taking the ball every fifth day than Silva. Silva might be pitching well now, but there is no way on earth he keeps this up for the remainder of the season.
Another reason why is this is a silly move? Hitters are batting .476 from pitches 1-15 from Zambrano. They are batting just .125 from pitches 61-75. That tells me Zambrano gets better as the game goes on.
The Cubs are putting Zambrano in a position where he usually gets hit the hardest. No wonder why the Cubs haven’t won a World Series in over 100 years.
