Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool Live: Europa League Semifinal

Atletico and Liverpool’s evolutions have been very much alike during the current season. Although initially they were among the favorite teams of the championship, neither of them will be able to get farther than the top 10.

Furthermore, both Liverpool and Atletico were eventually eliminated from the Champions League and have gone further only within the Europa League. After all, this tournament might save these teams from an otherwise disastrous season.

If Liverpool are no strangers to success in European cups over the last decade (they won the UEFA Cup in 2001 and Champions League in 2005), Atletico’s performances in the continental races force us to recall victories from the '60s and '70s.

The Madrid team managed to won their only European trophy (UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup) in the 1961-1962 season and played one match in the final of the European Cup in the 1973-1974 season. Another kind of important detail would be that about ten years ago, Atletico were playing in the Segunda Division in their home country, Spain.

The Spanish team seem to be really out of hand these days, too, as they lost the last three games, out of which one was against an already relegated team, Xerez.

On the other hand, Liverpool are neither in their best shape ever; inconsistency seems to be the keyword to characterize their latest evolutions during this season, both in the Premier League and in the European cups. Still, their last victory (3-0 against West Ham) will certainly offer Benitez’ boys a boost of confidence.

Liverpool will have to engage in the battle against Atlectico without Fernando Torres, who has undergone a surgery after which he has been left only with the hopes of playing the World Cup.

The current season is surely history for Torres and this is really a problem for Benitez, who doesn’t have too many options. Kuyt, Babel, and N’Gog are not in good shape, either.

Theoretically, the most possible result would be a draw, but if one takes into account that fact that Atletico has good strikers, the latter might win this match after all.
