Why Not Try Trades in MMA??

chris feaverApr 20, 2010

So much debate comes from the subject of pound for pound or champion vs champion between MMA organizations. With so much tension between Strikeforce and UFC with fighters calling out each other it made me think what if? Nick Diaz said he wants to fight GSP but says it wont happen because he feels GSP does not want to fight him. Dana White has said that he likes Nick Diaz and if he would "play the game just a little bit" he would have him back in the UFC in a second. I would love to see that fight but i dont think there is much hope.

Also from strikeforce we have seen Moussasi say he wants to fight Machida, Jake Shield says he wants to fight GSP and Anderson Silva, and Gilbert Melendez said he wants to fight BJ Penn and GSP. From the UFC side it seems to mostly be heavyweights saying they want to fight Fedor. There are a ton of fights that will likely never happen even though they would be huge fights, so how do we make them happen.

I don't see why MMA orginazations don't look into trading contracts just like they do in other sports. There are a ton of good fighters in the UFC that go unused for long stretches or that wont be released from their contract for fear that they would sign elsewhere and would be lost.

I dont know what every fighter is contracted to make but lets take someone like Jake Shields for example. I'm sure that being champ and winning 14 straight fight he is getting paid rather well. The problem here is that he has dominated his division in strikeforce and has no one to fight. Strikeforce is in a tough spot with him, obviously they want to keep him, he is their champ but with his win over Dan Henderson what would he get out of staying with Strikeforce now that he has virtually no competition for him.

Its no secret that Strikeforce needs more quality and recognizable fighters so why not trade Jake to the UFC where he ultimately wants to fight now. By trading him you get fighters in return and also don't see one of your bigger draws go while you get nothing in return. Just for the sake of argument lets say that they trade him to UFC for Jon Fitch and Martin Kampmann. Fitch is a top ranked WW but is in limbo with the UFC as he wants another title shot (which he deserves) but no one wants to see GSP beat him up again and he wont fight his teammate Koscheck for the #1 contender spot which gets Dana furious.

Considering you would be getting the champ from Strikeforce you would have to give up someone of value which fitch is, Dana seems to have issues with him anyway, and throwing in a young talent like Kampmann would sweeten the pot to get a multi division fighter in Shields. This is no different than trading players in basketball or football to improve your roster.

Its just a thought i had that would probably never happen but just think of the possibilities and options it would open up.
