Analyze This: Four Players Tottenham Needs in the Final Stretch

Jordan HughesApr 17, 2010

I do not want to sit here and comment on the recent good fortune (knock on wood) but I must say, what Tottenham has done this past week was quite, well (k.o.w.), extraordinary.

Whatever Redknapp's been feeding the boys, it has definitely filled their appetites.

The squad, be it by magic or by might, is beginning to click in a way that makes you ask, why hasn't this happened sooner???

Sure, Rose's goal was breathtaking, a stunner, and certainly something he will most likely never repeat again.

But his strike embodies something more about the side; it describes in great detail the passion and commitment to the game the Spurs exhibit. His celebration was exactly how any Spur would react after cementing his name in the derby history books. (And yes Gunners, you will be able to buy it on DVD soon.)

The squad is full of players that carry that extra bite and determination to push the Spurs over the hump in the dying embers of the season; player's like:

Gareth Bale, who was hands down the Man of the Match today.

His pace resulted in Ferreire's half time substitution. His aggression got the best of John the Red. And more so, he finished, all too neatly, past a top keeper in Petr Cech.

If Bale can finish out the season in his flying form Tottenham will have that much better of a chance at tasting the Champions League.

As for Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermaine Defoe, the partnership seems to be showing signs of life. The chipped through ball to Defoe early in the second half is just a glimpse of the chances these two can create together.

What needs to be said about the two is that goals need to come. Whatever is wrong with Peter Crouch may quickly become less of a factor unless Pav and Defoe can make the breakthrough.

Pavlyuchenko had a few strikes to show he is hungry, but his late misses, two that I really recall were unacceptable at the top level. He had the chance to truly put the game away, and it is imperative in these important matches.

Bassong is someone Spurs fans have come to rely on. While I may be alone in this comparison, I feel that Bassong is someone that will truly, and hopefully already has, taken to Ledley King.

Hopefully King will be able to face United next week, but as for finishing out the campaign, Sebastian Bassong will become increasingly important.

Dawson has reassured me that he is capable to complete the task, and time will tell for the young Cameroonian.

And speaking of that United game...

Six points out of six against Arsenal and Chelsea is more than I asked for...by a long shot, so I expect Tottenham to be just as hungry next week.

I'm tipping these four (perhaps just the three) to have similar, excellent showings.

Old Trafford, be warned.
