Minnesota Timberwolves Enter a Completely Dependent Offseason

Ethan WeiserApr 16, 2010

So, it's all over. The worst season in franchise history is finally over after losing 29 of their last 31 games.

But the Wolves enter an offseason where they have two overseas players, five draft picks (three in the first round), a ton of cap room, and a team full of young players.

And yet, as the offseason starts, writers everywhere are getting right onto their keyboards to begin their predictions.

The problem is, there's nothing to predict. The Timberwolves' offseason is completely dependent on things that are mainly beyond their control.

The Draft

The Wolves will start riffling through the bin of players who they want to select, but it all depends on how the lottery balls turn out. The lowest pick they could possibly end up with is No. 5, where the Wolves were two years ago when they selected Kevin Love.

But if the Lottery Balls give Minnesota the No. 1 pick, it's one of the only scenarios where the balls are in the Timberwolves' court.

If they get No. 2, it's probably either Turner or Wall, it just depends on who goes No. 1.

No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5, would give the Wolves a bit more freedom to pick who they wanted, but the players are of less value than that of John Wall or Evan Turner.

It just depends on the lottery, and the other teams.

Free Agents

The Wolves have the money to give, but do they have any takers?

That's what makes this dependent. The Wolves should really buy the best available player for their money, and then sign and trade if they don't fit their needs. But it really depends on who'll take the position in the chilly area, on the 15-67 Timberwolves.

Also, it really depends on the draft.

The draft will probably land the Wolves a couple starter-type players, and maybe a trade or two. How the team looks after that re-shaping will really make the free agency more clear.

Overseas Players

The thing is, it's never in the teams control!

They can persuade, have influence, and offer money. However, it's the players choice as to whether or not they want to leave their team and come to the land of 10,000 lakes.

Nikola Pekovic is the only one currently in this position, however, because Ricky Rubio can't be bought out until 2011, unless we pull something really tricky off.

Who Stays from Last Year

Well, that depends on who comes.

If we draft John Wall, there's a good chance that Jonny Flynn or Ramon Sessions will be moved. If we draft Turner, most Timberwolves will keep their jobs.

If we get Pekovic, it might make a case to release Milicic.

If we sign a few good post players, or even draft them later, it might be time to trade Big Al or Kevin Love. Love has a bit more trade value, but then again, he has a bit more value to the current team as well...

If we receive a good enough offer too, Brewer and Gomes aren't by any means untouchable.

It's an offseason that you can't predict just yet. It's kind of a bummer for the writers here on Bleacher Report, but fans, you'll hopefully love every minute of it.
