2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – NORTHWEST REGION – SECOND ROUND

         #3 Texas 74, #30 Jackson State 57

    Texas had four players in double figures and took control of the game in the second half to defeat Jackson State 74-57 in a SMCAA Northwest 2nd round contest.  The Longhorns, who only led by three at the break, broke the game open behind Damion James, who had 19 points on 8 of 15 shooting for the game.  James also added 13 rebounds on the night.  James was joined in double figures by Dexter Pittman, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Avery Bradley and his 12 points, and Gary Johnson and his 11 points.  UT dominated on the glass, out rebounding the Tigers 47-32.
    Garrison Johnson led Jackson State with 21 points and was a perfect 7 for 7 from the free throw line.  De’Suan Dixon was the only other Tiger in double figures with 12 points and rebounds.

        #19 Stephen F. Austin 71, #14 Montana 52

    Stephen F. Austin jumped out to a 15 point halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 71-52 win over Montana in a 2nd round Northwest contest.  The Lumberjacks shot the ball well all night long, hitting 51% (27-53) from the field.  Will Reinke had 13 points off the bench to lead SFA to the win.  Jereal Scott and Orren Tims each had 10 points to contribute to the win.
    The Grizzlies got 18 points from Anthony Johnson, but he was the only one to make it to double figures.  Montana had problems shooting, hitting only 36% from the field and only 4 of 14 three point shots in the game.

        NORTHWEST REGION 3RD ROUND: #19 Stephen F. Austin vs. #3 Texas

        #22 Middle Tennessee State 69, #11 Southern California 59

    Middle Tennessee State used a key second half run to break open a tie game and went on to beat USC 69-59 in a Northwest 2nd round game.  Trailing 31-29 at the break and tied at 52-52 with 7:30 remaining, the Blue Raiders used an 8-0 run over a three minute span to take 60-52 lead.  Desmond Yates led the way with 16 points for MTSU.  Calvin O’Neil had 15 points and 5 assists while Montarrio Haddock added 13 points and 6 rebounds in the victory.
    The Trojans got 14 points from Dwight Lewis, 12 points from Leonard Washington, and 12 points and 10 rebounds from Alex Stepheson in the loss.  USC could only manage to shoot 23% from three point range and 55% at the free throw line.

        #6 Notre Dame 74, #27 Florida Atlantic 65

    Notre Dame got all of its points from six players, but it was enough as the Fighting Irish defeated Florida Atlantic 74-65 in a 2nd round Northwest win.  Notre Dame only played 7 players in the entire game and was led by Luke Harangody, who 21 points off the bench on his 8 of 13 shooting.  Tyrone Nash (14 points and 9 rebounds), Ben Hansbrough (13 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists), Tim Abromatis (10 points) all contributed in the victory.  The Irish were able to get the win despite making only 7 of 23 three pointers and hitting only 68% of their free throws.
    The Owls were led by Greg Gantt and his 17 points. Raymond Taylor added 16 points and 7 assists in the loss.
