2010 NFL Draft: Sam Bradford to the Cleveland Browns a Possibility

Brian DiTullioApr 15, 2010

According to a report from the Cleveland Plain Dealer , the Cleveland Browns front office has talked to the St. Louis Rams about trading up for the number one pick in order to take Sam Bradford.

Team President Mike Holmgren admitted it would be costly and is not a realistic plan.

"You'd have to mortgage the ranch," said Holmgren.Ā "In the real world, we're probably going to go in a different direction.''

While Holmgren's attitude makes perfect sense, especially considering how many needs the Browns have at the moment, General Manager Tom Heckert said he has been in contact with every team in front of them in the draft and a few more after their pick about possible draft day trades.

This is a smart move because no matter what anyone mocks for the first round, the only thing guaranteed is the draft never quite goes how anybody thinks it will.

Should the Rams pull a swerve and draft Ndamukong Suh, that means Bradford automatically falls to at least the Seattle Seahawks as the board stands now.

It then becomes a race between Seattle and Cleveland to see who can offer the Kansas City Chiefs enough to trade up.

It is important for not only the fans, but especially the front office, to temper enthusiasm from the hype machine with cold, hard facts. The Browns have a lot of needs, and trading the draft to get one player is not the way to rebuild this team.

Pulling a Mike Ditka would set this team back another two years as the Browns then wouldn't be able to take advantage of the amount of offensive and defensive line talent available in this year's draft.

If Bradford falls out of the first pick, consideration should be made to take him, but at the right price that doesn't take the Browns out of the draft until the end of the third round.

With one week left to go until the draft, as always, believe nothing and hope for the best.
