Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas, Carlos Tevez, Didier Drogba Are EPL's Best

Yoosof FarahApr 15, 2010

According to their fellow footballers in the Premier League and lower leagues, Wayne Rooney, Cesc Fabregas, Carlos Tevez, and Didier Drogba are the best England's showcase league has to offer.

The four have been nominated for the 2010Ā Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Players' Player of the Year award.

They have beaten off competition from fellow star names and playersĀ such as Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Emmanuel Adebayor, Jermain Defoe, and Darren Bent.

And it's clear why they have been chosen ahead of and byĀ the aforementioned superstars when you look closely at the impact they have had on their respective teams.

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney

The bookies have Manchester United and England hero Wayne Rooney as the unassailable favourite to win this award, with odds of 1/25.

He has scored the most goals of anyone in the Premier League this season, with an incredible 26 goals in 29 games, and thus has the best goals to games ratio, scoring a goal every 1.1 matches.

And overall, Rooney has scored 34 goals in 41 appearances this season, such a figure making him the only one to mount any sort of challenge on Barcelona'sĀ Lionel Messi for the title of the world's best player.

However, Wayne Rooney has only made four assists in the Premier League this season, which is a lot fewer than his competitors.

Chelsea's Didier Drogba

If there is one man who can challenge Wayne Rooney, perhaps it is Chelsea's Didier Drogba,Ā the Ivory Coast superstarĀ who has lifted the Blues to the top of the Premier League this season.

The frontman has scored 25 goals in 28 games in the league, and overall has scored 32 goals in 39 appearances, a goalscoring record almost identical to Rooney.

And unlike the aforementioned England talisman, Drogba has got 11 Premier League assists to his name this season; a statistic that has greatly helped his teammates, most notably strike partner Nicolas Anelka.

Despite his success this season, Drogba's chances of claiming the PFA award ahead of Wayne Rooney are seemingly slim, with the bookies giving Drogba odds of 20/1 to win it.

Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas

Captain of his team, inspirational leader Fabregas has had a massive impact on his Arsenal team, helping them greatly as they fight to win what seems to be an increasingly elusive Premier League title.

The Spainish midfielder might have a lower goalscoring record than the two above, but 15 goals in 27 league appearances from the middle of the field is very credible.

And that combined with his topping of theĀ Premier League assist chart with 15 assists this season, it's clear to see why Fabregas has been recognised so much by his fellow professional players.

However, just like Drogba, the odds of the Arsenal talisman claiming the award are slim, as the bookies have given the Spanish star only a 20/1 chance of winning.

Manchester City's Carlos Tevez

Well-known throughout the city of Manchester for obvious reasons, Carlos Tevez has been showing United fans what they're missing with his exploits for Manchester City.

22 goals in 30 games has helped City greatly as they fight to claim the fourth UEFA Champions League position, and his seven assists have also helped the likes of striker partner Adebayor.

28 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions is an impressive return for any striker, andĀ the impact he has on his team clearly goes far beyond some simple statistics.

Hence why the man described by Diego Maradona as the "Argentine prophet for the 21st century" has been given odds of 7/1 to beat Wayne Rooney and win the 2010 PFA Players' Player of the Year award.
