2010 SMCAA TOURNAMENT – EAST REGION – FIRST ROUND
#37 Arkansas-Little Rock 69, #28 Georgia State 56
Arkansas-Little Rock got 22 points from Matt Mouzy as they pulled away from Georgia State in their SMCAA East 1st round game, 69-56. Alex Garcia-Mendoza (12 points) and Solomon Bozeman (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Trojans, who shot a superb 21-25 from the free throw line (84%).
The Panthers, who were led by 17 points from Joe Dukes, only trailed by 2 at the half, 38-36. They were unable to stay with UALR in the second half, however, and ended up shooting only 38% for the game.
EAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #37 Arkansas-Little Rock vs. #5 Marquette
#26 Winthrop 77, #39 Florida Gulf Coast 70
Reggie Middleton and Matt Morgan combined to score over half of Winthrop’s points on the way to 77-70 victory over Florida Gulf Coast in a 1st round East contest. Middleton (22 points) and Morgan (21 points) combined for 43 points on a combined 14 of 21 from the field. Mantoris Robinson added 10 for the Eagles.
FGCU was led by Reggie Chambers, who had 15. Reed Baker and Anthony Banks added 12 apiece for the Eagles.
EAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #26 Winthrop vs. #7 Florida
#25 Radford 65, #40 Central Arkansas 48
Artsiom Parakhouski and Joey Lynch-Flohr each had 14 points as Radford cruised to a 65-48 East 1st round win over Central Arkansas. Parakhouski, who also had 14 rebounds, was joined in double figures by Phillip Martin with 11 points on a perfect day from the field (3-3 from the floor, 4-4 from the line).
The Bears were led by Tadre Sheppard with 11 points. But UCA couldn’t generate much offense against the Highlanders, who held them to 33% shooting.
EAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #25 Radford vs. #8 Virginia Commonwealth
#27 Mercer 85, #38 Idaho State 78
Led by James Florence’s 23 points, Mercer defeated Idaho State 85-78 in a 1st round East shootout. Florence was joined in double figures by E.J. Kusnyer (15 points), Daniel Emerson (15 points, 14 rebounds), and Brian Mills (12 points, 9 rebounds) as the Bears shot 74% from the free throw line.
The Bengals were led by Austin Kilpatrick, who had 22 points, including five 3 pointers. Amorrow Morgan (15 points), Demetrius Monroe (14 points), and Broderick Gilchrest (13 points) were also in double figures, but ended up sending Mercer to the line 34 times.
EAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #27 Mercer vs. #6 Virginia Tech
#24 Texas-San Antonio 76, #41 Stetson 66
Devin Gibson led the way with 23 points as Texas-San Antonio came back from being down at halftime, to defeat Stetson 76-66 in a SMCAA East 1st round matchup. Gibson, who shot 8 of 12 from the field, was joined in double figures by Omar Johnson (13 points) and Demarco Stepter (11 points, 7 rebounds). The Roadrunners, trailing by 2 at the break, outscored the Hatters 40-28 after the intermission.
Stetson was led by A.J. Smith, Ridge Graham, and Tyshawn Patterson, who each had 13 points. Brandon Williams added 11 for the Hatters, but it was not enough.
EAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #24 Texas-San Antonio vs. #9 St. John’s
#23 LaSalle 67, #42 Presbyterian 48
LaSalle took control in the first half, led by 18 at the break, and cruised to a comfortable 67-48 win over Presbyterian in a 1st round East contest. The Explorers were led by Rodney Green, who scored 14 points. Aaric Murray added 13 points and Jerrell Williams chipped in 12 off the bench.
The Blue Hose, who could just manage 15 points in the first 20 minutes, were led by Khalid Mutakabbir with 17 points. Chase Holmes added 12 points in the losing effort.
EAST REGION 2ND ROUND: #23 LaSalle vs. #10 Illinois State
#22 Massachusetts 64, #43 North Dakota 54
Massachusetts got 18 points from Ricky Harris as it ground out a 64-54 win over North Dakota in an East 1st round game. Harris was joined Terrell Vinson and Anthony Gerley, who each added 12 points in the win, despite the Minutemen shooting only 38% from the field. Vinson also had 12 rebounds in the win.
The Fighting Sioux got 13 points from Travis Bledsoe, while Spencer Goodman and Patrick Mitchell had 11 points apiece. But UND could only manage to shoot 33% from the floor on the night.
