Overview
The 2008 Auburn Tigers enter the season as a strong contender for the SEC West Title. They are led by linebacker Tray Blackmon and a ferocious defense that should keep them in every game throughout the season.
The schedule is favorable for the Tigers, as they will face LSU, Tennessee, Arkansas and Georgia all at home. Auburn hopes to win the SEC West this year and give the East champion a run for their money in the SEC Championship Game.
Under the direction of new offensive coordinator Tony Franklin, Auburn will employ a new spread offense this season. Kodi Burns and Chris Todd are battling for the starting quarterback job and that battle could last into the early season. Auburn returns most of their playmakers in the backfield and at wide receiver and will have a very talented, though still young, offensive line.
The defense should be the anchor of the 2008 team and Auburn will go only as far as the defense carries them. The linebacking corps is solid and the defensive line has at least two future NFL caliber players.
Auburn has a tradition of hard hitting defenses that can win games and this year should be no different. If Auburn’s young players can continue to develop quickly, the Tigers should definitely compete for the SEC West and the SEC Championship. If history is any indication, 2008 could be Auburn’s year. The Tigers always seem to play better when they are flying under the radar.
Stay tuned for the release of the 2008 SEC Football Preview, which will include an in-depth position-by-position breakdown of the Auburn Tigers, along with every other SEC team.
